Houseplants are a simple way to bring nature into your home. I always remember my Granny’s house being full of plants, even though she lived in the heart of London’s east end. It made it feel like we were in a green house. These plants are perceived to be easy on maintenance as they require less light, less water, and of course less air. However, the same plants are highly vulnerable to the adverse conditions and may easily buckle in event of carelessness. I know this first hand, I kill plants very easily. Your houseplant will require some love and adequate care for better growth.
Nurturing a houseplant is difficult task for those lacking in green fingers like me. To make things simple for beginners, below are some simple hacks to help make your houseplants bloom.
#1 Sunlight Matters
You might buy an indoor plant thinking that it won’t need much of sun, but actually plants require at least couple of hours of sunlight to bloom. Place the plant near south or east facing window to provide it with sunlight during the day. East facing windows get morning sun that is good for a delicate indoor plant. West side windows receive harsh afternoon sun, which may hurt your plant. The position of the plant can be changed according to the season for proper care. Turn a plant on all sides during the week to get even growth.
#2 Water it wisely
Plants need water. Indoor plants are the species that would need less water and this calls for wise watering. Use a sprayer to keep the plant from getting water logged. Make watering a routine instead of putting in excess water once a week. Using just a little water at a time will ensure better absorption. For those forgetful plant owners who don’t water the plant regularly, placing a piece of sponge at the bottom may help. A sponge will retain the water.
#3 Escape for excess water
Excess water can create a mess. Placing a plate or flowerpot tray below the houseplant is highly recommended to keep the floor clean. Place a filter at the bottom of the pot. The water will seep through the filter while straining the soil. Don’t make a mistake of stopping the water from seeping to keep the place clean, otherwise the plant will die due to water logging.
#4 Organic manure
Organic compost can now be prepared from your green waste generated at home. The process is quite easy and can be carried out in ready to use compost making kits available in the market. There are several options available online to consider when purchasing this kit, these tools can be expensive but you can rely on Frugaa.com. By using coupon codes you will get supplies you need to help your seedlings sprout. This organic compost is good for your plant health. Tea leaves can also serve as organic manure. Boil tea leaves for some time in water, cool down and use it for your plant. Using tea leaves is particularly good for a flowering plant. Mixing coffee with potting soil has also proved to be a great nutrient for soil.
#5 Succulents
These little plants are hardy, small and easy to look after. Plus, they’re bang on trend right now and come in all sorts of colours, and they look damn good on Instagram. They’re practically foolproof, but don’t ignore them completely.
#6 Outdoors on rainy day
Rain water has lots of minerals necessary for the growth of plant. Either fill up a bucket with rain water or give your houseplant an outing. A little rain water would help the plant bloom.
Houseplants need love and affection. Name them, sit beside your plant, talk with it, touch it, and play soothing music to make the plant bloom in full colors. It may sound crazy, but it works!
