Face masks are now the inevitable. At the beginning of the year I couldn’t have imagined we would all be walking around the supermarket wearing face masks and using hand sanitiser. It seems crazy but it’s become the norm. I have two favourite cloth masks and some disposables I use. I also have to wear one at work for my 12 hour shift. My face is breaking out!
So, do kids even need to wear one?
The truth is the advice is ever-changing, so it’s a good idea to check your country’s requirements on the official government websites. At the moment in the UK, children 11 and over need to wear a mask everywhere an adult does. Babies should definitely not wear one.
Where to find decent kid’s face masks
The retailers have cottoned on to the fact there’s a market for children’s face masks, so they are available in local shops and a lot of supermarkets. There’s online retailers like Amazon of course, and take a look on your local residents group on facebook, there are a lot of sewers out there making masks from their own fabric. Doing this is the most eco friendly way.
Types of face masks kids can wear
You can stick with the classic disposable mask if you like, but I find it contributes to landfill and isn’t good for the environment, plus there’s the danger you could be taking supplies away from where they are most needed.
The next type of mask is the most popular for children: the bandana face mask. They can look like their favourite superhero and you can even get custom bandanas for kids.
Alternatively, they can wear reusable cloth masks made with loops for the ears or tie ups. These are eco friendly but you will need a few because of the need to wash them in between wearing. Same goes for the bandanas.
The most effective masks are at least two layers thick, although a single layer is better than nothing. The thicker the material the better, so go for the best quality you can afford.
