4 Steps to Appreciating Yourself Again

Sharing is caring!

If you think that your style could do with reinvigorating or you look in the mirror and don’t like the person staring back at you, is it about actually changing yourself or should you learn how to appreciate yourself? We all can feel that, no matter how hard we try, there’s something missing. If you’re taking great care of everybody else, sometimes you need to pay attention to yourself. With this in mind, what are some of the things you can do to appreciate yourself again?

Stop Raising the Bar

You might think that as long as you are able to have a tummy tuck or a nose job, this would be the sole reason for you to give yourself the chance to smile again. But when we create conditions like this, we are not giving ourselves the chance to appreciate ourselves for who we are. And learning to love yourself unconditionally is one of those things that can take a long time to get right, but you have to remember this is the first step. Realising that you set the bar too high will help you to start accepting yourself for who you are.

Give Yourself Approval, Do Not Wait for Others to Give it for You

When we wait for approval from others we can be on tenterhooks, consciously or subconsciously, until we get the validation we need. It’s important to remember that rather than waiting for other people’s approval, you need to establish self-approval from within. One of the biggest lessons to achieving this is to realise that not everybody will approve of what you are doing and will not approve of who you are. But rather than letting those people’s opinions get you down, realising that your opinion is the only one that matters gives you that freedom to create self-approval.

Do Something Nice for Yourself

No matter how little it is, the very act of doing something that is for you and nobody else gives you that little permission to say “I matter.” When the air mask comes down in a plane, the rule is to put yours on first before you can help others. If you want to help other people, you’ve got to help yourself first. And when you take the time to do something that is for you, you will be better equipped to help others. If you put other people before you, you will burn out, but you will also resent everybody else.

Do Not Take Self-Criticism Too Seriously

Sometimes self-criticism is a great motivator but there is a fine line between this and beating ourselves up. When you become aware of the parts of your life that allow criticism to get to you which causes you to think less of yourself, you can step away from those areas that act as triggers.

There are many ways to learn how to appreciate yourself again. These are just a few but if you feel that you have been putting everybody else ahead of you, you taking that step back and realising that you matter is the first step in accepting yourself again.
