Well it’s brand new territory for me, my eldest is in year 6 of primary school now and it’s time to choose a secondary school. Neither me or my husband grew up in the area we now live in, so we are somewhat clueless as to which school is best. Add that with the outdated Kent system of grammar schools and I’m tearing my hair out!
At the end of the last academic year we had to decide whether to put him in for the Kent test, aka the 11 plus. We decided to put him in for it, although he’s been borderline for his literacy. I thought if he passes, it gives him more options, but if he fails, it’s no big deal.
We are actually in quite a fortunate position, as the local non grammar school is very good, and there is also a brand new STEM school opening next year which he has the option to go to. The choice makes it harder!
William struggles with too much choice and making decisions so it’s going to be hard for him. We will have to guide him, hopefully in the right direction. We went to one school open evening so far, which was very overwhelming. Secondary schools are much bigger, with more buildings and stairs! My head was spinning afterwards. School has moved on since I went for sure. I was very impressed with the facilities. I certainly wouldn’t be unhappy if he went there. He has also been to a taster day at another non grammar, a little further away. I have no idea how I’m going to manage next year with children at different schools.
We have a way to go, we get the results of the 11+ in a couple of weeks, we also have four more schools to visit and then we have to pick four to apply for by the end of October. Then, it’s a wait until the beginning of March to find out what school they get. It’s going to be a nerve wracking time, I’m sure by the time I do it with Daniel I will be more blase about it. October is going to be a busy month, that’s for sure. I’m attempting a blog a day in October, not necessary autumn themed.
