Are You Doing Enough to Look After Your Ears?

Ears don’t usually get much attention, do they? They just quietly do their thing, helping you hear your favourite music, follow conversations, and stay balanced. But when was the last time you gave them a bit of TLC? Sure, people know about hearing health (granted, it’s still not taken too seriously, even to this day). Plus, people seem to be fairly familiar with the fact that hearing age declines with age, too. So, your ear health and your hearing health are super intertwined, right?

But here’s the thing, the truth that you really need to know. Your ears are more delicate than you might think. And if you’re not looking after them properly, you could be setting yourself up for some frustrating problems down the line. This goes beyond just ear aches and infections, but yes, some hearing loss, too! So, here’s exactly what you need to know!

Is Your Volume Too Loud?

Oh yes, we’ve all done it, having cranked up the volume on our headphones to drown out background noise or get that extra kick from our favourite song. Now, you might know this already, but blasting music straight into your ears isn’t doing them any favours. Again, everyone has a bad habit of this, but it’s really bad for your ear health.

So, prolonged exposure to high volumes can lead to permanent hearing damage. Yes, even if it’s your go-to playlist. So, what’s the golden rule? Well, just try and stick to the 60/60 rule: listen at 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time.

And if you’re in a noisy environment, noise-cancelling headphones can work wonders. They block out external sounds, so you don’t have to turn the volume up to unhealthy levels. Plus, if your phone is warning you about the volume, then you should abide by it!

Are You Protecting Your Ears from Loud Noises?

So there are concerts, festivals, football matches, and so much more! They’re all great fun, but they’re also incredibly loud. Over time, repeated exposure to those booming sounds can take its toll on your hearing. So, what’s the solution? Well, it’s simple enough; it’s just earplugs.

Okay, now, before you roll your eyes, modern earplugs are nothing like those bulky foam ones you’re imagining. They’re sleek, discreet, and designed to let you enjoy the music or atmosphere while reducing harmful noise levels. And it’s not just about events. If your job involves noisy machinery, ear protection is non-negotiable.

Are You Keeping Your Ears Clean Safely?

Alright, now it’s completely natural and actually helps protect your ears. But when there’s too much of it, it can lead to blockages, discomfort, and even temporary hearing loss. But most people just don’t know how to properly clean their ears. If you’re taught something for a long time (or see other people do it), then yeah, of course, it’s not going to be correct! So, you shouldn’t just stick cotton buds in your ears.

Yes, seriously, you read that right! So, contrary to popular belief, all they do is push the wax further in, which can make things worse. If you think you need ear wax removal, then by all means, you should really skip the DIY approach and go straight to a healthcare professional. They’ve got the tools to safely and effectively sort it out for you.

Are You Taking Breaks After Noise Exposure?

Just like your muscles need to recover after exercise, your ears need time to rest after being exposed to loud sounds. If you’ve spent a few hours at a festival, club, or even a DIY project with power tools, give your ears a breather. You just need some quiet time, that’s all.

Are You Noticing the Signs of Hearing Changes?

Hearing loss doesn’t usually happen overnight. For most people, it’s a slow, gradual process, which makes it easy to miss. You might find yourself asking people to repeat things more often or struggling to follow conversations in busy settings. Yes, with aging, it’s natural, and that’s true. But still, if any of this sounds familiar, it’s worth getting your hearing checked. Plus, catching any issues early means they can be managed before they get worse.

Are You Protecting Your Ears in Other Ways?

Your ears are sensitive, and it’s not just noise that can cause problems. A lot of people get this part wrong! Cold weather, untreated water, and even allergies can all take their toll. For example, in the winter, your ears need to stay warm! If you’re swimming (especially in dirty water), then you need swimmer earplugs! Just never ignore the discomfort of your ears; this can’t be stressed enough!
