If you have a business that involves a warehouse, then you’ll already know how profitable it can be. Alas, it’s also true that there are a lot of expenses to be paid, and that can seriously eat into your bottom line. While there are frequently ways to reduce the amount of money you’re spending at your business, one of the best ways to boost your profitability is to look at increasing your productivity. Ultimately, the more bang for your buck you get, the more money you’ll make. But how can you do this? We’ll take a look at five tried and tested approaches for boosting productivity below.
Review Your Operations
If you’re trying to boost your productivity, then first you need to have a handle on your current level of productivity. You can’t figure out where you’re trying to get to until you figure out where you are. If it’s been some time since you last reviewed your operations, then it’s possible that many bad habits have crept in. Simply looking at where you’re wasting time is all it takes to plug some gaps and make things better. If you’re not sure how to look for productivity flaws, look at hiring a consultant to do the job for you. This is a process that you’ll want to do every so often.
Hiring and Training
There will be space in your warehouse for automation (more on that below), but at the core of your operations will be your staff. Of course, it’s not as if just having some employees will lead to the best results; you need to have the right employees. So take a look at improving your hiring process, so that the best candidates are pushed your way. Once they’re on board, you’ll want to commit to their training. If you’ve hired correctly then they will be skilled workers, but it’ll be the strength and frequency of your training that determines whether your company reaps the benefits of those skills.
What Can Be Automated?
Technology has come a long way in recent years, and today there will be plenty of automation options that’ll help your workers to dramatically increase their productivity, without necessarily working harder. Incorporating automation into the production line won’t only help to increase your company’s output, but it’ll lower your operating costs, too. It’s also worthwhile identifying your specific productivity issues, and seeing if there’s an automation tool that is designed to remedy that specific problem — there probably is!
Low-Value Goods
In some businesses, time is money. In others, space is money. When you’re running a factory, both time and space is money. If you’ve taken the tips we’ve outlined above, then you’ll have cut down on time. Now, what about space? Depending on your type of business, it may be worthwhile freeing up the space that’s currently occupied by low-value goods, and switching things out for higher-value goods. It could have an instant and significant impact on the amount of profit that your company generates.
