During this state we find ourselves in, I admit I am lucky I am married, but many of my friends are not. Prior to the lockdown they were enjoying dating casually and like many were using dating sites and apps to find their dates. It was as easy as swiping right and then you could meet up.
Then everything changed.
If you were seeing someone you were encouraged to make a choice – move in together or separate and see if you could go the distance. Casual dating was gone. If you’re looking for the one, meeting new people and dating is the only way you’re going to find out if you’re compatible.
There was a lovely story in Italy of a couple that got together across their balconies like star crossed lovers. Her sister was playing the violin out on the balcony and she locked eyes with a handsome man on another balcony. They started face timing and chatting and declared their love for each other. Since then they have met in person and are now engaged! So love can happen in lockdown, it’s just a matter of creativity.
How Dating Sites Will Work With Social Distancing
There are some ways adult dating sites and apps can still work during the strictest lockdown and then adapt as the lockdowns ease. You can still browse other people’s profiles and really hone down on what you are looking for. Talking via messages back and forth works for some people, others prefer talking on the phone and others like video calling. For me, I like to talk via messages first and then gain the confidence to video call. I like to feel we have something in common. The only problem with just written messages is that can easily be misconstrued without tone and context. My husband is terrible at texting, but great in person. If we’d have had to talk solely by text we would never have got together! So try different mediums and don’t give up!
Maybe you just love meeting new people and like nostringsdating? I am so set in my ways now if anything happened between my husband and I, I don’t think I could live with someone again, I like my own space too much. I would still like some company, so casual dating would work for me.
What about meeting in person?
As the lockdown measures ease, people are starting to be able to meet another person outside their household as long as social distancing measures are practised. This could definitely work for dating. Here are some social distancing date ideas:
- Picnic in the park
- Game of Tennis
- Game of Golf
- Walk in the woods
- Dog walk
- Treasure hunt (Geocaching)
- Rock painting and hiding
- City walk
- Open top bus ride
- Boat trip
You see? You can get creative with it, it doesn’t have to be just sitting across from each other in the park. Maybe you both like art and painting? Bring it with you, then if you are anxious about long silences, you have your hobby to bridge the gap. The only thing you have to remember is to keep 2 metres apart – for now!
