The thought of becoming a parent can be a scary one. The list of things to do seems almost endless, as does the vast amount of mostly unsolicited and contradictory advice that comes from everyone as soon as they either find out or notice that there is a baby on the way.
Getting the nursery ready will be somewhere near the top of that list, along with preparing for the birth, and thoughts of creating a safe and beautiful space for your baby will constantly running through your mind. You won’t want to miss anything, so here’s a quick checklist of things you need to buy before the baby arrives.
Putting all of this together can be expensive, and while family and friends will often endeavour to help out, you could also apply for a small, short-term loan to ensure you are able to purchase the absolute essentials. Cot
This may seem obvious, but it’s something with which you won’t want any half measures. After all, your newborn could be spending, according to Healthline, 14-17 hours each day in there, so it needs to be a safe, secure and comfortable environment.
Video Baby Monitor
Things have moved on a bit since the old audio baby monitors, and now the ability to keep a watchful eye on your newborn when you’re not in the room is a widely available alternative. Various models are available online and high street retailers.
Mattress and Mattress Cover
Not only do you need to decide which type of mattress to use for your newborn, but you also probably need to invest in a waterproof cover as well so it doesn’t get ruined by the inevitable leaks, spills, and other ‘delights’ that come with a new baby.
Nursing Chair and Stool
Newborns are notoriously hungry, and a nursing chair will make life much more comfortable for those that do it. Feeds can happen all around the clock, so finding one with a matching footstool can be a real bonus.
Changing Table
Changing a newborn can be a complicated business if you haven’t done it before, and you’ll soon discover the key to getting it right is to be organised and have everything to hand. For that reason, a purpose-built changing table can be invaluable.
Baby Clothes
Again, this might seem obvious, but many new parents simply underestimate the number of clothes that a newborn will get through in a day. There will be leaks, spills, and dribbles, among other things, that will spoil whatever it is you just dressed them in five minutes ago.
Cupboards (or a chest of drawers)
You’ll need something to store all of this in, and you’ll soon find that whatever amount of storage you happen to have, it’s not enough. It doesn’t have to be purpose-built; just have lots of draws and cupboards for putting your newborn’s essentials in
