I’d love to have a caravan or motorhome for my family. Although travel is tricky at the moment, there are so many places in the UK that I’d like to visit when restrictions are eased. Scotland is somewhere I have always wanted to explore and I have a friend up there I can visit. The Yorkshire moors are begging to be explored and I have fond memories of the lake district as a child. Devon and Cornwall are so chocolate box cute I’d love to go back.
When we can travel again, we can take everything we need with us and be self-contained without the worry of staying in hotels or B&Bs. We can also change our plans at a moment’s notice, and if we are not away in the caravan or motorhome, we can use it at home as extra living space. 4 Berth Or 5 Berth?
If I was choosing the perfect caravan or motorhome for my family, I would start by looking for one that has enough room for us all. We’d actually need 5 berths as we are a big family. What’s a berth? I had to check this because I wasn’t sure if it was a bed or a room. It’s the technical term for a bed space in a vehicle. For us, we could choose between having a five berth caravan which would allow for a double bed and three singles – usually, a combination of children’s bunk beds and a single bed made up from a small dining area (known as a dinette) – or we could go for a four-berth and attach an awning to allow for a couple of extra sleeping spaces plus more living space. This would also mean that in the years to come as the children get older, they could have a friend along with us as well, and we could also take the caravan away as a couple and have a lovely amount of living space just for two.
In terms of layout, it would be great to have at least three bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen diner living room. The more space the better really, and of course storage is key. We need to be able to bring enough food and kitchen equipment for a least a week.
Caravan Or Motorhome?
I’m torn between a caravan or a motorhome, to be honest. With a motorhome it’s simpler, you just drive and go and the freedom you can get from it is amazing. Just park and sleep! With a caravan, your vehicle is separate from your living space and you can use the car for day trips once the caravan is unhitched, but you will have to familiarise yourself with towing and make sure you choose a caravan that matches your car and your driving licence. Don’t worry though – there is plenty of help out there from retailers and the two main caravan clubs, and there are courses you can go on to help you learn how to tow.
