Giving Birth During the COVID-19 Pandemic: What You Should Prepare For

Disclosure: collaborative post

As we continue to live through these uncertain times, it is no longer surprising for some expectant mothers to feel anxious and scared to give birth. Most of this fear is due to inadequate knowledge about how to go about their delivery. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your childbirth:

Stay Healthy

The very first thing that you should remember is that you should prepare your body. You have to make sure that you and your baby are healthy. Go to your prenatal checkups. If you can’t go physically, ask your doctor if you can set up an online appointment. Ask about vaccinations and the schedule when you should go to the medical facility to undergo the necessary lab tests to prepare accordingly. Keep in mind to take all your prenatal vitamins and supplements prescribed by your doctor. Make sure that you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Prepare Your Overnight Bag

As you near your expected delivery date (EDD), you should make sure that you have your overnight bag ready. If you haven’t had time to shop for your baby’s clothes, it will be best to shop online for the sake of both safety and convenience. Wash the clothes, let them dry, and iron them before packing them into your baby bag. Make sure that you have the essential with you including baby blankets, clothes, cotton balls, diapers, thermometer, alcohol, sanitary wipes, and all the necessary essentials. This way, you don’t need to pay extra in medical bills for these consumables.

Coordinate With Your Medical Provider

Always remain in contact with your medical provider. Know their contact numbers and give them a means to communicate with you in case of an emergency. You should also coordinate with them about where you are going to give birth and the process you should follow in case you need to give birth unexpectedly. Ideally, your chosen hospital should have a separate entry point that is not used by COVID-19 positive patients. You should also inquire about the necessary paperwork that you need to present to the medical facility where you will be admitted.

Undergo a COVID-19 Test

Health officials have made it mandatory for pregnant women to undergo a COVID-19 testing as a precautionary measure for the health workers who may be exposed to you during the delivery. It also helps them determine whether they need to isolate you from other patients within the facility.

Consider Home Birth

If you are anxious about your possible exposure to the coronavirus, it also helps to consider giving birth at home. There are many midwives that you can contact to help you prepare your home for the arrival of your child. They can help you manage your expectations and work to help you lessen your anxiety about giving birth.

Sterilize Your Home

Before you welcome your little one into your humble home, make sure that you have done the necessary clean up by sterilizing all items that your child will use. Sterifre Medical (sterifre.com) advises mothers and midwives to shift to automated sterilization measures to ensure that all pathogens are killed, particularly those that cause deadly viruses.

Limit Visitors

While you may want to share the joy of welcoming your newborn child with friends and family, you may want to limit the number of visitors. Better yet, set up a video conference call in the meantime. Newborns have weak immune systems and visiting friends may only expose them to pathogens.

Make sure to check all these items as part of your preparation for your childbirth so you can ensure your and your child’s safety amid the pandemic.
