How To Get More Light Into Your Garden

You might think that because your garden is outside, it’s automatically going to be light and bright, but the fact is that isn’t always the case, and some gardens can be dark and dreary. When that happens, you won’t want to spend much time outside enjoying the fresh air or entertaining friends and family, and that’s a shame because being outside is good for your physical and mental health, not to mention the fact that it’s fun.

Of course, the good news is there are things you can do to ensure your garden is brightened up. With that in mind, here are some great ideas about how to get more light into your garden – read on to find out more.

Prune And Trim

One of the simplest but most effective ways to get more light into your garden is to prune and trim overgrown trees and bushes that are getting in the way. When you take away any overhanging branches or you cut down the height of a hedge, you’ll immediately be able to let more light into your garden because there will be less blocking the sun’s rays. As an added bonus, you might also be able to let more light into your house when you do this, as you’ll get more sunlight through the windows too.

Of course, while trimming bushes is something you can do by yourself for the most part, cutting back trees is probably best left to experts due to the safety factor involved. Tree lopping is a potentially dangerous thing to do because you’ll be up high using high-powered tools.

Choose The Right Plants

Strange as it might seem, the plants you choose to have in your garden can really affect how light – or otherwise – the space is, so this is definitely something to think carefully about. Make sure you have plants that thrive in your native climate and soil, as they’ll grow better and make your garden look good.

When it comes to making your garden lighter and brighter, you’ll need plants that aren’t too big (or they’ll block out the sun, as we mentioned above), but you should also look out for plants that have lighter green leaves and bright colors, rather than dark foliage. When you plant bright plants in a dark garden, everything will brighten up.

Use Reflective Surfaces

Perhaps you’ve heard about how useful mirrors and reflective surfaces can be in your home – placing them in strategic places can brighten up a room and even make it feel bigger. So why should it be any different just because you’re outside?

Think about adding mirrors or lovely glass ornaments to your garden to reflect the light into areas that might otherwise be shaded. The light from things like light-colored stones or decorations with metallic elements will really make a difference.

Use Light-Coloured Materials

Following on from the point above, whenever you’re adding anything to your garden, always opt for light-colored materials, as this will help to brighten up the space more easily. Think about your fencing, patio, pathways, and even the furniture you have in your garden, and choose light-colored options, and you’ll instantly see what a difference it makes.

If you prefer the darker shades, you can still have them, just make sure they’re not the main element otherwise your garden will become much darker than before, which isn’t what you’re trying to achieve.
