How To Make Your Home Feel More Comfortable When You Move In

renovating-family-home-tips

It’s fun to move into a new home, but it can feel strange at first. When you are in a place you don’t know well, you might not feel that at ease yet. It takes time to get used to a new place to live, and it will take even longer for it to feel like home. However, there are some simple things you can do as soon as you move in. Read on for some of the best ways to make your home feel more comfortable when you move in to help the adjustment for you and your family.

Clean It

A thorough spring cleaning should be among the first things you do after settling into your new home. Often when we move into a new property, it still appears rather dusty and dirty, especially if it has not been lived in, so cleaning the surfaces and flooring in all the rooms before the furniture and décor is put up is a good idea.

This might not be possible if you’re leaving one property and moving directly into the next, but if you do have time between moves, taking that time to thoroughly clean the new place is a great idea. If not, you’ll still want to clean everything you’re able to. This can be a big task, depending on how the previous occupants left things, so you might want to get some help from friends and family or even hire professionals to do the work for you.

Put Up Pictures

Pictures of loved ones on the wall make a house feel more like a home and less like a strange, foreign place the moment you walk through the door. Gather several empty A4 picture frames and fill them with images of loved ones or pieces of art you’ve had lying around the house. Your walls will instantly seem more like home when you hang photos of your loved ones on them.

You might choose photos of great holidays or days out, of birthday and Christmas celebrations, or just pictures you like because they show a genuine smile. Having these friendly faces around will enable you to settle down much more quickly, and it’s an easy job to do, so even if you have a full to-do list, you’ll be able to get started by achieving this job first.

Listen To Music

Music is a great way to relax, no matter whether you love show tunes, 90’s pop, or heavy metal. If you enjoy it, it’s going to boost your serotonin levels as you listen and make any situation feel better – including making your home feel more comfortable.

You might not have set the TV up yet or connected the broadband, you might not have found your tablet or laptop. You probably won’t have time to sit down and read your current book. But you will be able to listen to music as you unpack and get comfortable.

Whether it’s just you or a crowd of people moving into the property, put some music on and enjoy it as you put things in their new homes. Not only will the music help you stay motivated and keep you moving, but it can be a great memory in the future; you’ll hear a certain song and remember the day you moved into your home when you and the kids danced around and chose where to put your precious things.

Do Something With Your Windows

Decorating the windows of a new house is not typically at the top of a homeowner’s to-do list. However, investing in some stylish window treatments, such as bright curtains or sleek blinds, can completely transform the look of any space.

Most of the time, when you buy a house, it already has some old or boring-looking blinds or curtains that you probably won’t like. If it’s brand-new or if the previous owners took absolutely everything with them, you might not have anything at the windows at all. The first scenario might make you feel as though the house still belongs to someone else, and the second will make it hard to get comfortable because you won’t have any privacy.

By putting up some curtains or blinds right away that match your personal taste, these small changes can really turn a house into a home that feels like it’s yours.

Add Plants

Plants are one of the simplest ways to make a place brighter, and they have been shown to reduce stress, which is crucial after a move. There are several excellent plants that will purify the air and give the entire house a much fresher, cosier feeling. Try to bring your favourite plants from your previous home if you can because the familiarity will make you feel more comfortable.

Of course, plants aren’t just for inside. If you have a garden in your new home, it’s a good idea to do what you can to make that look and feel good too. Depending on the time of year you move, it could be worth buying spring bulbs to ensure that the garden looks lovely later on. For now, tidy it up and perhaps work out a plan to make it feel more like a space you want to be in than one someone else used to like.

Get Food

In all the chaos and confusion of moving house, one thing often gets forgotten – food. You might bring a few staples with you from your old place, but most people try to use up the food they have before a move, as transporting it can be a problem. This is especially true if you’re moving far away.

Therefore, something that will help you feel more comfortable is to spare some time to ensure you have fully stocked cupboards and that your fridge and freezer contain everything you need. It’s true you might treat yourself to a takeaway on the first night, but after that, you’re going to want to get back to normal.

You probably won’t feel like going to the supermarket, so why not pre-arrange an online food delivery for the evening you move in? In that way, the removals company will have left, you’ll have started to unpack, and you can take delivery of the food without any hassle.
