How to Prepare for a 4D Ultrasound Scan

A 4D ultrasound scan can be one of the most joyful moments of your pregnancy. Seeing a detailed image of your unborn baby’s face will make you feel even closer to them, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch your little one smiling and waving hello!

Unfortunately, some babies are more cooperative than others. The quality of your scan images will depend on your baby’s position inside the womb, and if they’re feeling camera-shy, it might be impossible to get a good look at them.

Our policy here at First Encounters Ultrasound is to offer a complimentary re-scan on rare occasions when our sonographers are unable to obtain a satisfactory image. Still, if you want to make sure you have a truly memorable 4D scan experience the first time of asking, there are several things you can do before your appointment to stack the odds in your favour.

Here’s our guide to preparing for a 4D scan:

Should I drink a lot of water before a 4D ultrasound?

Yes, we recommend that you drink plenty of water in the week leading up to your scan. This will help to ensure there is enough amniotic fluid available for clear imaging.

It’s also a good idea to drink lots of water on the day of your scan. If your baby is in a head-down position, your full bladder will help to lift their head up and out of your pelvic area, giving you a better view of their face.

What is the best thing to eat before a 4D scan?

The foods you eat immediately before your 4D scan can help to wake your baby up and get them moving for you. We recommend having a sugary fizzy drink or a chocolate bar 20 minutes before your appointment.

Another popular option is ice chips. Some people like to chew on chips of ice before or during the scan to get the baby awake and moving around.

How do I get the clearest possible 4D ultrasound scan?

On top of your food and drink consumption, it’s also important to try to relax as much as you can. Your baby will sense any tension and might not want to move very much.

It’s also a good idea to move around yourself. For example, if you’ve driven a long way to the clinic and you’ve been sitting down for a long period, try to walk around the car park or waiting room a bit before your scan.

If our sonographer is unable to capture a decent image of your baby’s face right away, they will suggest that you take a gentle stroll before trying again. This quite often does the trick, eliminating the need for a second visit.

What should I wear to my 4D scan?

There are no specific rules on what to wear to an ultrasound scan, but it is preferable that you wear a comfortable, loose-fitting two-piece outfit on the day of your appointment. This will make it easier for the sonographer to access your bump and conduct the scan.
