How To Prepare For Bringing Your Newborn Baby Home

Finding out you are pregnant and bringing a new life into the world is one of the most amazing things you can ever do. Being a parent is the perfect way to grow your family and take the next steps in your life. As you progress towards the end of your pregnancy and get ready to welcome your little one into your home, there are a myriad of things you should do in order to get ready to welcome your new bundle of joy. It can feel a bit overwhelming knowing you will soon have another little life to take care of, but as long as you are as organised and prepared as possible, it is nothing to worry about. If you are feeling a little bit overwhelmed, don’t fear, for we have put together some top tips for how you can prepare for bringing your newborn baby home. This should make the transition that bit easier for you.

Make to-do lists and be as organised as possible

No matter if you are still a few months away or a few weeks, it’s a good idea to start getting ready sooner rather than later. This will ensure that you are ready if the baby comes early and also means you don’t have a large amount of expenditure or things to do when you become a lot more pregnant. The more pregnant that you are, the harder it is for you to get around or have the energy to do everything you need to. This will mean you make it easier for yourself later down the line. There are many to-do lists you could make, from what baby bits you need to buy, to any jobs that need to be done around the house. You could also create a wishlist such as on Amazon where people can purchase things for you without you needing to ask them.

Fix up any niggles around your house

Over time your house can have little snags and niggles that occur making life that little bit more difficult. It could be something like a leaky pipe, a drawer without a handle or a light that doesn’t have a shade. No matter what the issue is, when it comes to getting these issues rectified, you will have a lot more time to do them now than when you’re little baby is here. Plus, you don’t want anything to be a potential hazard to your child when they start to crawl and get around. Order things such as a new iron pipe for your plumbing, sort your wiring, or get experts in and soon you will have all those little bits sorted. They might take time but once they are completed you will have a lot more peace of mind and be able to relax.

Purchase baby bits ahead of time

This doesn’t mean just going out and doing a huge shop when you have a week to go until your due date! Instead, we recommend you get your baby bits in spurts throughout your pregnancy. This is a great way to keep the costs down as you won’t have one large spend at the end of your journey, instead it will be spread out over many months. It also means you can get things when they are on sale and track their prices. You will be able to take advantage of things such as the summer sales, boxing day sales, and Black Friday. It’s a good idea to bulk buy things such as nappies, baby wipes and formula (if you are using it) as these will be items that you will always need plenty of.

Have a hospital bag packed and ready by the front door

When you get to around eight months of pregnancy, it’s a good idea to have your hospital bag packed and ready by the door. This means if you suddenly go into labour you will be prepared and be able to just leave without having to faff and rush about finding all the things that you need. There are many great bags on the market that you can use as a hospital bag, and it’s good to get little organisers in there too to separate your bits and pieces. In your hospital bag you will need items such as a few changes of clothes for yourself that are loose and comfortable, super-absorbent maternity pads, your wash bag, healthy snacks, any medicine you might be taking, outfits for the baby, nappies, a muslin square and a car seat for the trip home – among other things. There are many resources you can use online that tell you exactly what to pack in your hospital bag.

Learn to use all your new baby equipment before they come home

With so many amazing gadgets available on the market now, it can become a bit of a minefield deciding just which ones you need. Once you have purchased all you need for the baby, the next tricky bit is figuring out how to use it all. Some of the items might require assembly and might need batteries. They might also be tricky to use. To avoid any frustration once the baby is here and you are actually trying to use them, learn to use items ahead of time. This will make it much less frustrating and will save you a lot of time.

Wash your baby’s clothes before dressing them in them

You want all of your baby’s stuff to be as clean and nice as possible, so ensure their clothes don’t have any germs and are clean before their arrival. To do this, wash them all and dry them ahead of time. This will make it much easier and nicer for them when you bring them home. Newborn babies tend to need changing multiple times a day so you will want to have plenty of babygrows and other outfits on hand when the time comes to get them dressed and change them. Remember that babies tend to come “fully clothed” as many people will purchase items for your little ones, so when you are buying baby clothes to get outfits for older ages as well as for the newborn stage. This will avoid you having lots of outfits that they will soon grow out of.

Get rid of as much clutter as possible

Having a baby means you will have a lot of new items in your home for them. If you already live in a cluttered space then it will only become more so once they are here. To avoid it becoming too much of a mess and making it a lot easier for you to clean, it’s a good idea to get rid of as much clutter as you can ahead of time. Think about items that you haven’t used in a long time or items that are just there for decorative purpose and are taking up space unnecessarily. You want everything to have a purpose and to make it as easy to store, tidy up and put things away as possible. This will make a real difference when your home is busier and has a lot more items in it that you need to clean.

Make a bedside box with things you will need to access quickly and easily

You will be getting up a lot during the night, particularly at the beginning so you aren’t going to want to faff around trying to find things when you are half asleep. Have a bedside box ready with items in it such as a muslin cloth, baby books, bottles, pacifiers and more. This will save you having to rummage around when it’s dark and you’re very tired! You can also pop nappies, baby wipes and more in here so if you need to do a nappy change in the night it is easy to find. Alternatively, get all the items you will need for night feeds or changes out in your front room ready for the night once you have gone to bed.

These are some of the top ways that you can prepare to bring your newborn baby home. It will be a big change to your life, your routine and the way you do things so you are going to want to be as ready as possible. Remember that it will take time to adjust to your new lifestyle and things won’t be as smooth sailing as you might want – particularly at first. To avoid this, practice and prepare as much as possible and be ready for things to go wrong. Remember you are simply trying your best and that’s all you can do – your baby will love you for that! After a few weeks you will soon slip into a routine and find it all a lot easier and you will know what you should be doing and how to navigate your new life.
