Is ADHD Underdiagnosed in Modern Society?

You might have heard of ADHD. It has become more prevalent, or at least it is spoken of more readily now than in previous decades. You may not be clear about what the term means, though. You may also wonder whether it’s underdiagnosed in modern society.

We’ll talk about this question in the following article. You can also seek out mental health treatment in Orange County if you live there and believe you or someone in your family might have undiagnosed ADHD.

What Exactly is ADHD?

ADHD means attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It is a chronic condition that’s usually diagnosed in childhood, but some adults receive this diagnosis as well.

If you have ADHD, it often means that you have a hard time concentrating. You may be hyperactive or impulsive.

Because of this, it is not uncommon for individuals with an ADHD diagnosis to have a hard time in school or at certain jobs. They might also have a challenging time in relationships if the person with whom they partner is not understanding of their condition. Is There a Chance ADHD is Underdiagnosed or Overdiagnosed?

There is always a chance that any condition is under or overdiagnosed, and ADHD is no exception. However, if you ask a qualified medical professional, even with their informed opinion, whether they think under or overdiagnosis is the case with this condition, the answer they give you is not the gospel. If they ask several doctors this question, don’t be surprised if you get several different responses.

The main reason for this discrepancy is that there is a lack of standardized diagnostic procedures that can prove definitively that someone has ADHD. Certain behaviors can indicate it, but it’s also still a matter of opinion to some degree with the medical professionals who test for it.

If someone is neurodivergent, it’s likely testing will discover this, but whether this neurodivergence amounts to ADHD isn’t as easy to quantify. Several conditions might share traits or behaviors with ADHD but are, in fact, something else.

The Diagnosis Doesn’t Always Matter

It might frustrate you if you’re the parent of a child and take them to see a doctor about a problem with their learning capabilities. What if that doctor says they have ADHD, but then a second doctor says they don’t? As it turns out, even if you see several doctors, and they don’t necessarily agree about a clinical ADHD diagnosis, that’s sometimes of secondary importance.

What’s more critical is the consensus that your child is neurodivergent, even if the exact nature of that deviation isn’t agreed upon. Once you at least have that level of agreement, you can start to talk about treatment options. Often, doctors will allow you to seek behavioral therapy and medication for your child, whether or not they believe they have ADHD or something similar.

Whether ADHD is underdiagnosed might not be able to be definitively answered. What’s more important is that anyone who might have this condition gets the help they need.
