Letter to my eldest son as you turn 7

You turned 7 this August. It was Aristotle who was first quoted as saying

“Give me a child until he is 7 and I will show you the man”

– this is so true. I can see physically how you are turning into a man,  you’re getting your adult teeth and your face is taking on that angular, long shape of the awkward teenager to come. You’re so handsome, but of course I would say that.

 

You get on with girls very well, when we’re out somewhere or on holiday,  you’re more likely to find a girl to chat and play with rather than a boy, although not exclusively. With all your older cousins being girls and a younger sister it’s no surprise really. You’re very much into male pursuits though.

Playing Minecraft, especially hunger games (on the Xbox)

You have a love hate relationship with your sister (as is normal),  you’re very close and also protective, which I like to see. I hope you continue to stay close as you grow up together. You’re close in age so you have a lot in common.

You are gaining confidence and independence, you like to help me out but only on your terms!  You get annoyed and angry easily,  but you’re beginning to recognise how to deal with these emotions, sometimes you take yourself away to calm down. You like cuddly toys and don’t like any of them to be left out in the bed. You have a teddy given to you when you had a stay in hospital that is particularly precious. The dark and spiders scare you,  despite my reassurances. You’re at home with technology and gadgets and I’m pleased to say you don’t have my sense of direction – you often remember where I parked the car!

You love making people laugh and if you stumble on something that tickles me, you’ll try and recreate the moment. You love your mother very much, often giving me little gifts, like flowers. If I talk about when you’re grown up and leaving home you don’t like it, you want to stay with me forever – I’m sure that’ll change, for the moment I’ll reassure you you can. You got upset the other day when you wanted to marry me and I told you you can’t! 😄 You’re a sensitive soul and get upset easily and take things to heart. This will get easier with time.

You love helping me with blogging and vlogging and I predict that you’ll be a future vlogger. I encourage you to go for your dreams and don’t let anyone stop you. You get frustrated when you’re not good at something straight away, but you’re learning to accept that things take time to master.

I love how you help with your little brother and play with him. I hope this continues into adulthood. He looks up to you so much!

You’re about to go into year 3 at school, you do well at school and like to please your teacher and peers. I know you’ll do well. You’re not that keen on homework and have to be coerced into writing and arts and crafts – forget it! You hate getting messy hands and clothes, but to get you in the bath is a challenge. A swimming lesson and shower once a week and the odd bath we squeeze in.
