Luxury Bathroom Inspiration that’s accessible

We’re in the process of doing up our bathroom next now we’ve (almost) finished the living room, bar the flooring. I’m going to be taking advantage of the January sales, or at least I’ll feel like I’m getting a bargain even if it’s not really one! When it comes to the bathroom, it’s hard because eventually we want to knock through the wall that separates the bathroom and toilet and make one big bathroom, complete with over bath shower and maybe even a double sink – that really would be luxury.

I did up the toilet a while ago, with a very small budget, I used really cheap vinyl floor tiles in black that I fitted myself, a new black toilet seat and stripped the wallpaper. I took time in choosing my wallpaper, I wanted something different so I went for this funky clock print wallpaper. I painted the woodwork and the inside of the door in a dark grey gloss. It looks really impressive and we always get comments on it. Unfortunately, Daniel’s ripped a bit of the paper, but luckily only a small bit. When we knock through I’ll lose that, but I think it will be a while before that happens.

The main bathroom still needs work, we have the original 1930s tiles still up, which are beautiful, but looking a bit tired and cracked in places. We had to even replace one, so now that one looks bright white among the rest! We’ve made a start on the walls, filled in the cracks and painted it white, in preparation for a sandy stone colour. I plan on making it a beach theme, which can be easily done with thoughtful colours and accessories. If you go big on art and accessories, you can easily change your theme later on without having to do major works. So far I’ve only got the pebble blind and some fishing village art prints, but I’ll get there in the end. I have my eye on some lovely pieces from one of my favourite local homeware stores, The Range.

For now, until we can do the major renovation works, we’ll just paint the walls, add a bath panel and put new vinyl flooring in. When we get a new bath I’d love to get a Jacuzzi bath put in, that really would be luxurious. We were debating about a separate walk in shower, but then we wouldn’t be able to fit in a bath as well and I do love a nice bubble bath (when I don’t have little people barging in).

As we’re an ageing population, it is important to consider how accessible your bathroom is. Of course, we’re still young, but it is in my mind and more so for my parents (they’ll hate me for this). Three years ago my husband broke his acetabelum (the back of his hip joint) and couldn’t put any weight on his right leg for 3 months! We had to get a bath seat that sat on top of the bath so he could sit on it and shower, plus a perching stool and a raised toilet seat. It gave me a glimpse into the future – we still have the bath seat in the garage – you never know. When we’re choosing our fittings it is something I will keep in the back of my mind, and if the time comes when my parents need a bit of help to keep them in their own home, if I can help them in any way by guiding them in the right direction of mobility aids like a walk in shower with a seat, or an accessible bath then I will.
