I’ve recently taken the leap from employed to self employed, which meant I had to give back my lease car and buy my own car. That was an experience in itself, I had a budget of £1200 and I wanted a large family car as I was sick of trying to jam three children into my 3 door fiesta! With a small budget, it meant getting an older car, in the end I went for a Citroen Xsara Picasso, 2007. It’s red, my favourite colour – this may or may not have influenced my purchase!
It means I have to take care of it, the car apparently had one careful owner prior to me, so I feel the responsibility. I love driving and I love the freedom the car gives me, but I must admit I’m a bit rubbish when it comes to taking care of them. On my list so far:
- Change the squeaky windscreen wipers
- Check it in for a service
- Hoover it out
- Give it a name – suggestions welcome
- Fix the scratch on the door (it came with it, honest!)
- Make sure the treads on the tyres are ok
- Check the spare tyre
- Check the tyre pressure
- Check the oil level
- Check the water level
- Fill up the screen wash
I’m much better at writing about doing it rather than actually doing it, but it might spur me on. I’ve been better at clearing out the rubbish though, so that’s a start. It drives a bit like a bus or a tank, it has a big boot and space for all three in the back seat. I love it!
When I had my lease car, I got a flat tyre and it was all sorted by the lease company – it meant driving to the nearest tyre place to get it done as it didn’t come with a spare, but all the decision making was taken away from me. If I had one now (this is why I need to check the spare) I don’t have the foggiest how to change it, I’d just call the breakdown service. Then I’d have to get a new one to replace the spare – Point S is a tyre company that have a useful tool on their website where you can just put your registration in and it immediately knows which tyre you need and gives you three options of tyres; bronze, silver, gold according to your price range. You can then put your postcode in to see where your nearest dealer is. Another headache taken care of.
