Oven gloves are a necessity, but they don’t have to be boring. We had a nice set of oven gloves but then someone left them on a lit hob (not me), and luckily we didn’t burn the house down as they were silicone, but we were left with gloves that had a not so useful hole in them! We started using tea towels but really they just don’t cut it. Justin Proud over at Proud & Co Kitchenware offered to be my saviour and sent their rather jazzy oven gloves for us to review. Their tagline is ‘Not your grandmother’s oven gloves,’ and indeed they’re not! I love birds used in art and fabrics, I think it’s a symbol of freedom and expression, so I am thrilled to carry on my bird art obsession with my oven gloves.
Do they work?
They come as single gloves in three eye catching designs and are rather like a wetsuit, all neoprene and silicone. At first glance you might think they won’t hold up, but I’m pleased to say they do, even the hottest dish and after you’ve been holding it for a while, no heat comes through like some others do. I actually find it easier using the single gloves rather than the double oven mitt. They come in handy when you have a kitchen disaster, like when I over caramelised the sausages!
