Last week I went to see the Gruffalo Live theatre show with Phoebe and we took along my Sister-in-law, Brother-in-law and their two children. It’s on at the Vaudeville theatre in The Strand, London until January 3rd 2016.
We got their without a hitch and were shown to our seats. We had stalls tickets in row F and we could easily see the action. Phoebe sat in her own seat, with her younger cousins sitting on their parent’s laps.
We got our souvenir programmes, which have a cast list with information, a butterfly hunt and a Gruffalo dot-to-dot on the back (Phoebe had fun doing it and colouring it in!).
The theatre is a beautifully grand old building with a wonderful ceiling rose, I couldn’t resist a photo. It’s small and intimate, perfect for family theatre.
The show has a cast of three: the mouse, the storyteller and the predators – the same actor plays the fox, owl and snake very well with costume changes and different characterisation. The fox is a cheeky cockney reminiscent of Delboy, the owl a seargent major type and the snake a camp latino fashionista! The storyteller then becomes the Gruffalo at the end and even comes into the audience to the delight of everyone! There’s plenty of audience participation and they brought in a Christmas flavour to it. It’s long enough to get good value entertainment out of it but not too long for little ones to sit for. It has plenty of songs and the story is recognisable from the book. Our family outing was a success, with even the youngest member (18 months) enjoying it, we didn’t hear a peep out of him the whole way through and the girls enjoyed it and joined in when prompted. A lovely treat for your family over Christmas.
