The Hidden Risks of Working From Home: How to Protect Your Health

Are you office or home based? If you sit a lot for work have you ever considered a sit-stand desk? I went to the Viking/Fellowes event to find out more

More people are now working from home than ever before. The pandemic has forced many organisations to transition to remote working, and while it has its advantages, it can also come with some hidden risks. Working from home can lead to physical and mental health issues, so it’s important to take steps to protect your health and well-being.

One of the most common problems that people encounter when working from home is a lack of physical activity. When you’re stuck at home, it can be easy to forget to get up and move around. Sitting for long periods of time can lead to a range of health problems, including back pain, neck pain, and even depression. It’s important to make time for physical activity each day, even if it’s just a short walk or a few minutes of stretching. Another issue to be aware of when working from home is disruption to your regular sleep schedule. It can be easy to stay up late working or to stay in bed for a few extra hours in the morning. This can lead to fatigue, which can make it difficult to focus and perform tasks.

What can you do?

1. Try to stick to your usual sleep schedule:

A. Set the same bedtime and wake-up time every day.

B. Create a comfortable sleeping environment, such as a dark room, a comfortable mattress, and a noise-free environment.

C. Avoid using screens (TV, phone, laptop, etc.) at least an hour before bed.

D. Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption in the evening.

E. Exercise regularly and avoid eating late at night.

F. Practice relaxation and mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga.

2. Consider setting up a dedicated workspace, if possible. This can help separate work and home life. Even if you don’t have a dedicated office, find a spot in your home that can serve as a designated workspace. Having a specific area to work that is comfortable and free of distractions can help you stay focused and productive.

3. Establish boundaries between work and home: make sure to take regular breaks and disconnect when the workday is over. Set a daily routine and stick to it.Get up at the same time each day, take regular breaks throughout the day, and make sure to include physical activity, such as walking, into your daily routine.

4. Avoid working in bed or in your bedroom: As this can make it more difficult to fall asleep and set up a desk or work area in another room of your home, and make sure to leave it when you’re done working for the day.

5. Make time for physical activity: even a few minutes a day can make a difference. Schedule in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day, such as walking, jogging, or yoga.

6. Take time to connect with loved ones: Working from home can be isolating, so it’s important to stay connected with people you care about. Schedule regular video calls with family and friends, and make time for social activities on the weekends.

Finally, it’s important to remember to take care of yourself when working from home. Make sure to take time to relax and to stay connected with friends and family. This can help reduce feelings of isolation and stress. Eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise can also help keep your mind and body healthy. Working from home can be a great way to stay productive, but it’s important to be aware of the potential risks to your health and well-being. Taking steps to protect your health can help ensure that you stay healthy and productive while working from home.
