Things to Consider When Buying Gifts for Children

It could be that a birthday is coming up, or maybe Christmas is just around the corner. Regardless of what the occasion is, it takes plenty of planning and thought when it comes to thinking about what gifts to give to the children in your life. They could be your own kids, nephews, nieces or even family friends. There are a lot of different things to consider such as the child’s safety, disappointment, family preferences, and of course cost of the gift. If you are unsure where to start, here are several things to consider when buying gifts for children.

#1 Consider the age of the child

Not all gifts will be appropriate for every age group, so you should start off by thinking about the child’s age and based on this information you can figure out if the present is suitable for them or not. For example, most toys will come with warnings or age restrictions on them, even if the gift appears to be safe there may be small parts that come off it and could get swallowed or become a choking hazard for younger children.

#2 Personalised gifts

Children of all ages love to feel special and unique, and a very simple way to do this is to get a customisable gift. Some of these gifts can be costly but they don’t always have to be. For example, buying personalised Christmas cards are a budget-friendly and thoughtful way of showing the child that they mean a lot to you.

#3 Ask for suggestions

When buying for young children (especially infants and babies) it is often worth asking the child’s parents, or other family members if there is anything in particular that they need or want, as this will eliminate the issue of overbuying items that they already have too many of.

#4 Ask the child what they want

A simple way of finding out what a child would like as a gift is to ask them directly, as most children will have a pretty good idea of what they do and don’t like. This doesn’t always have to be direct though and you can ask them questions to figure out what they are enjoying at the moment so that you can then research a way to incorporate it into a gift. You could also ask them to make you a wish list, this way they wish for anything (as long as they know they won’t get everything on it) and can be excited for a surprise that they know they will like.

#5 Avoiding disappointment

In the same way that children are generally happy with whatever they are given as a gift, there is always the chance of disappointment if you don’t get the exact toy or colour they prefer. So, it is advisable to double-check things like if they already have the specific toy, that their favourite colour hasn’t changed and that the gift you have selected is the right one, and not just similar to the one they want. Gift quality is another thing to consider when buying for children, and one that can lead to disappointment. If the gift is of low quality and is likely to break quickly while in use, this could also upset the child.

#6 Family preferences and considerations

It is advisable to consider the parent’s and any other family members’ lifestyle preferences and keep in mind things such as cultural, religious, traditional, and any other beliefs that they may have. For example, if the child’s household you are buying for is vegan then you should avoid gifts that contain animal products, or maybe the family are conscious of the environment and would prefer you bought a locally sourced and low-carbon gift from a smaller business. Another consideration to keep in mind is what the gift does, for instance, if it is loud or extremely large then it might cause problems for those that live with the child. For example, if the child is into music and you buy them a musical instrument, although this is a creative and nice gift idea, it might not be suitable for the family’s living arrangements. When purchasing loud, large, or expensive gifts it is always advisable to check with the household the child lives with as to whether the gifts are suitable or not.

When gift shopping for the children in your life, if you consider these factors, you should find the process a little easier.
