Are you hearing the familiar phrase “I’m bored” from your kids? While it may be tempting to occupy them in front of a smartphone or television screen, why not try one of the 10 fun ideas below!

1. Colouring-In Prints

Quick and easy, colouring-in is a favorite past time for most kids. You can purchase a colouring-in book, but it can be cheaper and faster to print of one of the many prints you can find online.

Try to find a character, setting or theme you know your child is interested in – you’ll be surprised just how many free ones are available on the web.

2. Bike Riding

Don’t neglect bikes when children come crying to you of boredom. Not only is riding a good tool for exercise, but they can also offer opportunities for socialising between friends, riding to explore new places.

If they currently don’t own a bike of their own, perhaps this could be a fantastic present idea for Birthdays or Christmas! Just make sure you review kids bike sizes – an incorrect size is not only uncomfortable but can be dangerous.

3. Write a Letter

Writing letters can be a great way to keep bored kid preoccupied. Ask them to handwrite a message to their friend, aunt, uncle or grandparent. They could tell a story, or draw pictures to illustrate key parts of the tale.

Make sure they finish it off with a decorative envelope!

4. Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is an activity that may take a little planning but is certainly worth the pay-out – kids being entertained for hours.

The hunt can be household items, or you can mix it up a little and add a theme to the search. This could be finding items starting with a certain letter, or have a certain attribute such as something soft, something colorful etc.

5. Cooking Class

While this will require supervision, cooking with your kids can be fun boredom buster, that ends with a delicious outcome.

When cooking or baking, get children involved as much as possible. Let them measure, pour, knead and stir, getting hands-on and following the recipe steps to make something from nothing.

6. Art Collage

Another fun, indoor activity, provide your child with a bunch of old magazines, paper or cardboard, glue and scissors. Try to give them a theme or setting that they need to follow and create.

You can also let them draw and fill or add to their collage if they are having trouble finding the right item from your magazines.

7. Water Fight

If the weather is getting a little hot, a water fight is a perfect way to keep kids both cool and distracted. If you don’t have any water guns or toys, pulling out the hose or setting up a sprinkler can sometimes be enough for an afternoon of fun.

Water bombs are also a cheap way to get a water fight started and are a big hit among children.

8. Gardening

Get your kids involved with gardening around the house the next time they tell you they’re bored. This may involve watering the plants, spreading mulch or pulling out weeds.

Buy some small plants and make an activity of digging holes and planting them. They can then look after them and watch them grow over time.

9. Build a Fort

Children love forts, so why not let them build their very own one with items around the house. Let your child gather blankets, pillow, cardboard and furniture to assemble their own hidden space where they can read books or have a tea party.

Add a flashlight when it gets dark for extra fun.

 10. Jigsaw Puzzles

Jigsaw puzzles are a wonderful way to keep kids busy, especially on rainy days. It also helps build cognitive skills as they try to find pieces and put the picture together.
