Gardens are great as they give the kids a safe space to play in and a peaceful area in which you and your partner can relax (ideally). But the one downside to gardens is that they can take quite a lot of maintenance. Especially in the summer when flowers are in full bloom! Pave Over Some Lawn
If you garden is all lawned, it could be worth paving over some of it. From the middle of spring, you will need to mow the lawn at least once a week. Maybe even more frequently if you have extremely good weather. By paving over some of it, you are reducing the amount that needs to be maintained. Not only that, though but you’ll also create a great space to put some garden furniture on to enjoy in the summer. Try to keep some grassy space, though, as it will give the kids a soft spot to play on.
Replace Hedges With Fences
Many of us use hedges to create boundaries between our gardens and our neighbour’s. However, hedges can be quite high maintenance and will need to be frequently pruned through the summer. There are many that you will be able to plant and leave, especially if you live in an area that has its fair share of rainy days. Cacti are particularly good at managing with hardly any water. If you want to add some colour to your outdoor areas, plant lots of begonias. They can also be quite happy without any water for long periods.
Feed Your Soil
Some gardeners swear by using plant food. However, if you do, you could end up working in your garden more often than you’d like. This is because your plant’s levels will need to be topped up regularly so you’ll have to water them with liquid food. If you want a low-maintenance garden, then the best thing you can do is feed the soil before you sow your seeds. If the earth is high in nutrients, your plants and flowers will thrive, and you won’t have to keep on topping up the nutrient level.
Keep On Using It
The more you use the garden, the less chance it will have of getting overgrown. Just being out and walking over a lawn can help keep the grass short. And while you are out, you can always pull up the odd weed that you notice. This way, they won’t build up, and you won’t have to go out especially to work on them!

I absolute agree with replacing hedges with fences! I did ours late last year but to add a touch of green (and extra privacy), my wife put up some crawlers. It looks awesome now and we haven’t had the need to trim the crawlers yet even after a almost a year!
