7 Self-Care Tips for Older Women

Sharing is caring!

Society has branded women to be caregivers or nurturers. From young girls to busy adults to old age, women are expected to do things or carry themselves in a certain way that society has defined as the “ideal lifestyle of a woman.” However, most women get lost in giving so much and forget to practice self-care in old age.

It’s crucial for every woman, from young professionals building their lives to seniors living in continuing care retirement communities, to practice self-care by doing some of these things:

1.   Get An Exercise Routine

With all the stress of working, having a life, and meeting your basic needs, you can easily lack time to incorporate a good exercise routine for yourself, especially if you’re not in a group of people who help you stay on track. Also, most people think that exercise is only for people who are overweight. However, the opposite is true. It is not only about the weight, but the immense benefits are more than what most think.

Most seniors may feel incapacitated regarding exercise, but you can get advice on physical activities that can work for you despite your age or health status. However, it’s essential to set goals for yourself when you start an exercise routine to help you get focused and disciplined. If working out is alone, try and recruit a group of friends or family members or get into a fitness group that aligns with the goals that will keep you on track.

2.   Keep Your Social Life Alive

A famous English author named John Donne once stated that “no man is an island.” The truth to his statement is that no man can live in isolation or prove to be self-sufficient. No matter the magnitude of reliance, we all practice codependency in different ways. Regarding social connections concerning gender comparisons in men and women, women are more likely to open up to their peers whenever they have an issue.

In this era where many people are sinking into depression, you have to intentionally take care of your mental health. One way to do it is by bonding with a small group of quality friends or family who take part in different outdoor activities or those with whom you can build each other positively. During stressful days, you can comfortably reach out to your social network to let out the stress.

3.   Read a Book

Have you asked yourself when you last read a book? The availability of phones and the internet has made it hard to cultivate a culture of book reading. However, if you’re not enriching your brain with useful information, you’re missing out on many benefits.

We understand that many people face challenges staying on one spot and focusing on one thing, especially a book, but having that quiet time away from your screen is equally important. Luckily, there are different ways to cultivate the reading culture in society. If you have eyesight issues, audiobooks may come in handy for you. The whole idea is to keep your mind engaged and escape into a new space while learning something new.

4.   Get Into Your Creative Space

Everyone, including those who have shy personalities, has a creative side that expresses who they are. You don’t have to be flawless at it for you to do it. For example, if you love painting but can’t do it so well, you can try out something else that you’re good at, like gardening, singing, cooking, or writing. All those and many more are options you can explore to know yourself better and see how far you can push yourself. Even if you engage in something that you’re not perfect in, don’t be afraid of messing up because of the criticisms that come with it.

Every creative process is unique for everyone, and you can only get better if you explore your interests. Don’t let age limit you, as women like Evelyn Gregory, Grandma Moses, Jacqueline Murdock, amongst others, have fulfilled their ideas late into their senior years. Age should never be a limit.

5.   Think Bigger Than Yourself

Showing gratitude not only entails saying “thank you,” but you can express it in a lot of other ways. For example, we all know of the magnificent Mother Teresa. Her way of showing gratitude was by exercising humanity by caring for the dying and destitute in the slums of Calcutta. To date, everyone uses her as one of the perfect examples of humanity. In the same way, you can identify things that show gratitude.

In the case of seniors, they have a lot of free time on their hands. Therefore, volunteering can be a great way to start. Volunteering doesn’t have to be expensive. You can volunteer to serve tea in a local school or help organize a food drive through a charitable organization once a month. Whether you want to volunteer outside the world or in your local town, relating with other people in these ways will always give you a sense of fulfillment.

6.   Eat and Drink Healthy

It’s normal to have “cheat days” in your diet at times and indulge in unhealthy meals to fulfill your cravings. However, you should know how to balance out your cheat days with more healthy meals and not engage in an unhealthy eating lifestyle. Try eating more raw foods like fruits and vegetables while balancing them with other wholesome foods to sustain a balanced diet.

Additionally, you’re encouraged to hydrate to prevent dehydration or constipation and maintain your skin glow. There’s no perfect formula for taking water as it’s also dependent on other factors like your weight. Also, remember that water is found in water and from other beverages or watery fruits. So, if you’re among the group that has trouble hydrating, consider other healthy hydrating options.

7.   Have A Proper Skincare Routine

It would be unfair to end this article without talking about maintaining good skin, especially in women. It’s easy for one to stop taking care of their skin because of age, but who wouldn’t want to age naturally and still look good? Like we mentioned earlier, hydrating is one great way to keep your skin glowing.

You can also apply sunscreen to prevent skin tanning and ask around for great skincare products for your skin. Nowadays, there are many affordable skincare products out there, and also, there are natural ingredients that you can make for your skin in the comfort of your home.

According to this dentist who does high-quality Invisalign in Ballantyne NC, aside from a skincare routine, taking care of their teeth is important for older women because it helps prevent dental issues like cavities and gum disease, which can impact overall health. Good oral health is linked to a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other systemic conditions. Moreover, maintaining a healthy smile can boost self-esteem and social interactions, contributing to better mental and emotional well-being. Regular dental care also ensures that they can enjoy a varied diet, essential for proper nutrition and overall health.

Self-care is an essential life skill, and no one should ever gamble with that. No matter your age, make it an intentional decision to take care of yourself in the best way you can.
