Just because you’re pregnant, it doesn’t mean that you can’t follow the same fashion trends as everyone else and put a bit of thought into your wardrobe. Yes, you’ll have a growing bump that will need to be accommodated, but there are plenty of trends that you can follow that will leave you feeling fashionable, modern and sexy during the full nine months – plus, pregnancy usually means you’ll need to go on a shopping trip, and what girl can say ‘no’ to that? Below are some of our favourite tips for a fashion-forward pregnancy. Show off your glowing body in more ways than one!
1. Show Some Skin
Women who have endured a summer pregnancy will tell you how hot and uncomfortable it can be if you cover up, so why not embrace your pregnancy and show some skin? Most women find that they don’t need to purchase maternity clothes until they are in the third trimester, so you may even find something that you’ll enjoy wearing after giving birth. There’s no reason not to throw an off-white hoodie on over your t-shirt, too, if you happen to get cold.
2. Midi Length Pencil Skirts Look Adorable
Midi length pencil skirts enable you to show off your pins while also accentuating your bump. Plus, they’re surprisingly comfortable and can be worn on a casual shopping trip with your friends as well as in the office. Check out pencil skirts in bright colours or white for a nice summary feel; blacks, greys and navies work better for office and corporate environments. Match them with a cute blouse, a cardigan and some small heels and you have a beautiful outfit that will make you glow. If you’re feeling they are too tight, try a jersey fabric.
3. Long Shirts are Great Comfy Casuals
We’ve all seen photos of female celebrities wearing their boyfriends’ shirts for a casual, dressed down look. Why not do the same in pregnancy? Roll up the sleeves, and let the loose material cover your bump in a comfortable, stylish way. When your bump gets large enough to need maternity clothes, you can buy a maternity tee to wear under the shirt, and wear it unbuttoned. With men’s casual shirts tending to be softer and more forgiving than women’s, though, this is a trend that is as relaxed as it is on-trend.
4. Embrace the Bump with Colour Blocking
Now before we talk about this trend, we should mention that there are certain ways to do color blocking really well, and also ways that will make you look like you’ve been cut in half in all the wrong places. However, if you take a look at the maternity collections of some of the top designers, you should get an idea of what we mean when we say, ‘embrace the bump’. You want to look for a jumper or a tee such as a Balenciaga T-shirt that colour blocks just under your bust line. It’s a fun way to show off your bump, while also showing off your quirky side.
5. Horizontal Stripes Make You Look Slim

Horizontal stripes are cute whether pregnant or not. However, when pregnant, they can help to accentuate your bump while making the rest of your body look slim. For a really nice look, find a top that contains small dark lines next to large brighter lines. Off-white and navy are an especially good choice, although you can find these tops in many different colour combinations. Pair with a nice pair of jeans and some flat shoes and you’ll look gorgeous on a casual day out.
6. Bright Colors Can Boost Your Mood
There will be some days during your pregnancy when you’re just not feeling yourself. During the first trimester, you may struggle with nausea and vomiting, and as your pregnancy goes on, you may begin to feel uncomfortable and exhausted. Bright colours are a great option when you feel like this as not only do they look great, but they can also help to boost your mood. They also, perhaps surprisingly, can help make your skin tone look better, so it’s a win-win all round. Also, just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t splash the cash if you have it! For your first trimester, you could invest in a piece from the Saint Laurent t-shirt collection and find a tee in a colour that suits the rest of what you own. You’ll then be able to save this statement piece for after you’ve given birth and wear it as an oversized tee.
7. Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment
Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment. If you feel comfortable wearing the clothes that are already in your wardrobe, then go ahead and wear them. Many celebs opt to wear tight dresses throughout their pregnancy, and many other clothes are built with stretchy fabrics that can easily accommodate a growing bump. If you can’t afford to shell out on a maternity wardrobe, don’t worry, as you may not have to.
Bonus: Don’t Forget the Accessories!
For the most part, you should be able to wear most accessories that you already own, with the exception of tighter-fitting shoes and rings due to feet and fingers swelling. But outside of these, there are options! You just can’t go wrong with classic gold necklaces, a cute mini handbag, and even accessories for your hair (like a hair scarf or a detail hair claw). In the winter, you can even have a nice winter scarf or shawl wrapped around you. But definitely keep incorporating accessories into your outfits, it just has a way of really bringing an outfit together.
Pregnancy is a fun and exciting time, but some women feel a bit unfashionable, especially during the later stages. Keep the above tips in mind and be a fashionista. Show your bump and your body off in style!
