8 Great Ways to Encourage Family Bonding

Sharing is caring!

It’s natural to want to treat your family, and there is no harm in making a more conscious effort to encourage family bonding. You may sit down together at dinner time, or share car journeys to and from school, but how often do you spend quality time together? Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to grow closer to your loved ones and spend more time in their company, so you can go stronger as a family unit. Here are our top 8 family bonding activities that can make you strengthen your bond.

1. Get a family membership

A great way to ensure your family spends quality time together is to buy an annual membership to your favourite cinema, theme park, sports club, library, museum or zoo. Family-friendly establishments like these often offer great membership deals for families, lasting for days or even months. With a membership to a cinema or theme park, for example, you and your family can enjoy discounted visits, and can therefore to make it a weekly or monthly tradition.

2. Buy a new board game

If your family love to play games, whether over the holidays or on Sunday evenings, you could benefit from buying a new board game to increase family bonding enthusiasm and to teach the children new skills. Board games are also great when the weather is bad as they distract from boredom and are generally inexpensive. For some board game inspiration, check out my Blogger board game posts.

3. Get matching jewellery

Another way to strengthen your family bond is to buy matching jewellery. This could mean investing in engraved rings, signature family bracelets or matching necklaces. You can even get matching necklaces for couples to show your love between you and your partner.

4. Stock up your kitchen with new baking utensils

One of the best family bonding activities is baking. You don’t need to get new equipment, but there is something special about preparing the kitchen, following a recipe, teaching your children about measurements, mixing the ingredients, waiting for it to cook in the oven and eating the final product. If this is something you and your children love to do together, why not make it more fun by buying special baking utensils – cookie cutters in fun shapes, colourful rollers, a personalised apron, etc.

5. Consider getting a pet

Getting a pet will mean your whole family will have to pull together to ensure the new family member is cared for. Whether you get a dog or a cat, or even something small like a hamster, it will teach your children great responsibility. If you don’t want to spend a lot on pet care, opt for a lower maintenance pet like a goldfish or even stick insects.

6. Go on a road trip

A long family road trip across the country may sound testing, but it can be a time when the most precious family memories are created. Pack up the car with the kid’s swimming gear, footballs, tennis rackets (whatever your children love to do), a load of food and hit the road! With everyone in the car on the way to explore a new place, you’ll have the trip of a lifetime.

7. Volunteer

Volunteering is an essential way for children to experience how other people less fortunate than themselves live and gives them a sense of perspective and gratitude. Volunteering – whether at a food bank or at a charity – is a great thing to do as a family to strengthen your appreciation for each other and create valuable experiences.

8. Do chores together

Nobody likes doing chores, but chores shared across an entire family isn’t so bad. Try creating a schedule of chores and dividing them equally among the family (dependent on the difficulty and the age of your children), and then aim to complete the tasks at the same time – maybe with some music playing and some treats at the end. This will create an immense sense of morale and will mean your family grow stronger as a single unit.
