Whether you have always loved the idea of being a midwife, or have a deep passion for healthcare, there are a variety of reasons why you might consider a career in midwifery. In some places like Australia, you need a diploma in nursing before you can become a midwife. You can even get this diploma online. To learn more click here. Though difficult and often strenuous, the work is rewarding, as you help bring new life into the world every day.
Here are 3 reasons why you should consider becoming a midwife!
- No two days are the same
One of the most common complaints people have about their jobs is that they are boring or repetitive. However, working as a midwife is a far cry from a job where you are sat behind a computer all day. For one thing, you’re hardly ever sat still at all. Whether you are working as a community midwife, or within a gynecology ward within a hospital, you are always on the go and never short of work. Some days you will be delivering children, others you will be teaching trainees how to provide proper postnatal care. Sometimes you will be visiting new mothers, others you will be writing reports. There is no set routine to follow. However, this can be exciting! Each day, you’re helping facilitate safe births – allowing parents to hold their babies for the first time. There is simply nothing more rewarding than that moment – and it makes all of the hard work with it!

- You want to help others.
One of the most key skills required to be a midwife is the desire to help others. This is at the heart of your day-to-day routine, and you work with others’ best interests in mind. As a result, you should not consider this profession if you aren’t prepared for long, grueling hours. You should also note that whilst the majority of patients are kind and appreciate, others are much less thankful. Regardless, you can leave work each day (or night) knowing that the work you put in made a difference to somebody’s life – helping them for the better.

- You can make a difference.
As a midwife, you will also have the opportunity to contribute positively to your local community – through providing them with more widespread information and supporting new mothers on their journey into parenthood. Providing them with knowledge and experience will make a huge difference in their lives and consequently, the lives of their children. Furthermore, you can contribute your findings and research to medical journals, further developing the understanding of women’s bodies and the birthing process for generations to come.
In short, there are many reasons why you might want to be a midwife – but it is important that you are passionate and willing to put the work in. However, once you have made the decision – finding employment can be even more difficult, even after you’ve completed your training and education. Thankfully, sites such as PracticeMatch are great at connecting employers with healthcare professionals, helping you find your dream job – whether that be through providing you with access to the neurological surgery job board, or providing you with information on vacancies within Women’s hospitals, or gynaecology units.
