THE BENEFITS OF ARTS & CRAFTS FOR CHILDREN

Sharing is caring!

Arts and crafts can be a fun activity for children to engage in, and something which is particularly appealing when the weather isn’t very good; however, creative activities like this also benefit children’s physical and mental development, helping them gain a number of important skills which will stand them in good stead throughout the life. Here a prep school for girls in Cobham outlines some of the ways arts and crafts can enhance your child’s life.

Motor skills

Participating in arts and crafts gives children an opportunity to develop their fine motor skills, that is, their ability to make movements using the small muscles in their hands and wrists. They’ll use their fingers to grasp and manipulate different materials and learn to use both hands simultaneously (perhaps doing different things with them). Through activities such as cutting using scissors, gluing small pieces on, or using a paintbrush they’ll develop their skills in making fine movements which will enable them to do all sorts of things later on in life.

Creativity

Painting a picture or creating a model allows children to use their imagination to create something from scratch. As well as enhancing their creativity, they’ll learn to solve problems, think about things in different ways and test out their ideas. This helps them develop a growth mindset and problem-solve in other scenarios.

Self-esteem

Creating something from nothing gives children a feeling of accomplishment and belief in their own abilities. They’ll be proud of what they’ve achieved, and probably want to show it off! Receiving praise for their work will boost their confidence and make it more likely they’ll want to create things and embrace challenges in the future.

Maths skills

Arts and crafts can also help children consolidate mathematical concepts they’ve learned at school; for example, they might measure and count items and materials when preparing to design something or learn about different shapes and sizes while creating a model.

Self-expression

Engaging in arts and crafts can also contribute to good mental health in children. It provides a healthy outlet for challenging thoughts and feelings and a way for them to express themselves. They’ll have a creative way to manage their emotions and one which might actually give their caregivers a helpful insight into their mental state.

As you can see there are so many benefits to children doing arts and crafts which are not just about the finished product, although what they do produce will be a good reminder of what they’re capable of.
