Important Processes to Design When Starting a Business

Sharing is caring!

There’s a lot involved in starting a new business. For most new business owners, this often means flying by the seat of their pants. Muddling along until you figure out what works can help you find success, and it’s pretty common if you don’t have a lot of business experience. But it can also mean you waste time and money trying to get your business organised.

If you really want to get your business set up in the right way, you should try to be more intentional about what you’re doing. One of the steps that should be included in this is designing different business processes. Your processes will standardise what you’re doing and give you clear steps to follow for more consistent outcomes.

The Order and Fulfilment Process

This process is all about the steps involved in someone making a purchase and your company fulfilling it. To understand this process, it can be useful to look up O2C meaning the order to cash process. This is every step from an order being placed to fulfilling the order and the business receiving a payment from the customer. What specific steps are required for this process and what order will they typically be in? This can depend a lot on how your customers will make their purchases and what method they use to pay. For example, do they order online and pay instantly, or do you invoice them and give them time to pay?

The Sales Process

Of course, before you can fulfil any orders, you have to know how you’re going to make sales. The sales process can actually have a number of different processes. It’s another thing that can vary depending on what type of business you’re running and who you’re selling to. Your sales process might include making proposals to potential clients or carrying out discovery calls. It could mean giving quotes or negotiating prices and deliverables with clients. But the sales process could look quite different if you run an e-commerce store.

The Hiring Process

Many small businesses start off without any employees, but you may soon have to hire some if your business is growing. Having a clear hiring process is essential if you want to hire the right people and welcome them to the company. Even if you use a recruitment agency, you still have to consider the process of selecting the best candidates and onboarding your new hires. HR processes need to take a number of legal issues into account too, so it’s important to have people who know what they’re doing and can get it right.

The Customer Support Process

Finding success with your business if you don’t have good customer support is definitely going to be tricky. You could have the best products but your reputation can still take a hit if your customer support isn’t up to standard. There are many forms of customer support through different channels, so you may need to consider how to provide the right support in a variety of ways. But no matter which channel you’re thinking about, you need to plan what responses you expect from your customer support staff, how quickly they should be responding, what follow-up might be required, and more.

The Product/Service Creation Process

Creating new products or services might not be something you do too often. It’s probably a focus when you’re developing your core products, but you might not want to launch anything new too quickly. But, regardless of how often you develop a new product or service, you should still have a good process for doing it. You need to know what steps you should be taking to develop not just any product/service, but a great one that’s actually going to help you achieve your goals. From the initial idea to testing it out and finally launching it, a clear process will help you get it right.

The Vendor or Supplier Process

Finding the right vendors or suppliers is a process that you want to get right every time. Going with the wrong one could lead to problems down the line, so you need to take the right steps on your first attempt. You should also think about not just the process of finding and onboarding a supplier, but also the process of maintaining relationships, placing orders making payments, and generally continuing the connection with your chosen vendor.

Get your business set up from the beginning by designing important processes that will help you to do everything right.
