What to Expect in the Internship Phase
In the internship phase, you’ll begin to put the theory into practice and apply your knowledge of health promotion, disease prevention, advanced clinical assessment, and management of episodic and chronic care challenges. You’ll also learn about leadership and evidence-based research.
Clinical experiences provide opportunities to work with a wide range of patients. They include ambulatory clinics, community health centers, academic nurse practitioner-run group practices, tertiary and specialty hospitals, long-term care facilities, structured day health care programs, mobile medical services, and other diverse practice settings. Clinical rotations are not limited to primary care and are typically selected to align with your specific interests, such as pulmonary, dermatology, hematology/oncology, or cardiovascular disease. Your professor will advise you about your options. You’ll also participate in simulation events providing in-person and virtual experiences working with standardized patients. These experiences are designed to help you develop your critical thinking skills. They also give you the experience needed to prepare for national certification.
