7 Things That Constitute a Medical Emergency

Sharing is caring!

Many people hesitate to go to the emergency room because they don’t want to feel like they’re wasting everyone’s time. Instead of waiting it out to see if your condition improves, here are seven situations that constitute a medical emergency that should not be overlooked.

1. Breathing Difficulties

There could be a number of reasons why your breathing might be affected. You could be having an asthma attack or an allergic reaction like anaphylaxis. Difficulty breathing could occur due to physical exertion, but if it comes on suddenly or unexpectedly, then there could be something that’s terribly wrong and you should definitely seek attention from Urgent Care Utah.

2. Epileptic Seizures

An epileptic seizure is the involuntary and uncontrollable twitching or shaking of a part or all of the body. This is the most common form of a seizure; another type of seizure involves no movement at all, and the person will not respond when they are being spoken to. After the seizure has occurred, it’s important that medical attention be sought immediately.

3. Heart Attacks

A heart attack is a serious, life-threatening medical emergency that requires immediate attention. When a heart attack occurs, a person will experience chest pain, radiating pain down the left arm, shortness of breath, feeling sick or dizzy, sweating, and an overwhelming sense of doom.

4. Bleeding

This is not like a paper cut; if the bleeding is uncontrollable, there is a foreign object in the wound, or there is exposed tissue/bone, then you should go to the emergency room.

5. Severe Pain

Although some medications at home are capable of taking care of pain, severe pain is any pain that makes it impossible for a person to carry out their normal daily activities. If the pain is the result of an injury, then it would be best to go to the emergency room to receive treatment.

6. A Person Collapses/Faints

A person could faint and lose consciousness or even have their breathing affected. This can be caused by a number of medical reasons, which should be assessed by a medical doctor. If someone has passed out and isn’t breathing, you should call the emergency number immediately; if they are breathing, still call and also put the person into the recovery position.

7. A Stroke

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is suddenly cut off. This could be caused by a blood clot or there is a bleed on the brain. The main signs to look for if someone has had a stroke are:

● F: Face; are they able to smile? Does their face look different? Is their face drooping to one side?

● A: Arms; can the person lift both arms at the same time and keep them above their head? Are they experiencing numbness in one arm?

● S: Speech; can the person speak a coherent sentence? Is their speech slurred?

● T: Time; don’t waste time and call the medical emergency number immediately.

Some medical emergencies are more serious than others, but it’s important that you or the individual with the condition seek medical attention as soon as possible to prevent it from becoming worse.
