One of the most challenging things to do is trying to manage a balance of a demanding career while at the same time also trying to navigate pregnancy. It really is like one big juggling act that makes you wish that maternity leave could just get here already! Just think about it: one minute, you’re handling work deadlines, and the next, you’re dealing with morning sickness or a sudden craving for something random like pickles. It’s no small feat to keep it all together.
Again, something like this is really hard to balance (and both on their own are hard). So, while it’s not impossible, you can balance both of these out a bit better. So, where do you start? Well, here’s exactly what you need to know!
Set Boundaries at Work
When you’re used to giving 110% at work, slowing down and setting boundaries can feel tricky. But pregnancy is the perfect time to start. Plus, it’s technically the time when you need to start, too (seriously, you’ll need to). So, whether it’s saying no to extra projects or making it clear that you’ll need some flexibility for medical appointments, setting boundaries can help keep stress levels in check.
Overall, you’re going to have to be open with your employer or manager about your pregnancy and how you plan to handle your workload. If they know what’s going on, they’re more likely to provide the support and adjustments you need. It might feel a bit awkward at first, but remember, this is about taking care of yourself and your baby. That baby needs to come first!
You Should Embrace Comfortable Maternity Clothes
What do you usually wear to work? You might know this, but what you wear does have an impact on your mood and overall productivity levels, too. Just think about it: if you’re constantly tugging at your waistband or feeling squished in your clothes, it’s just going to add unnecessary stress to your day. Sure, for the first trimester, you’ll still be able to wear your regular clothes, but by the second, you’ll have to look into some maternity wear that matches your style (and is work-friendly).
So, usually, maternity clothes can be a bit expensive, but it’s really worth buying a few things at the end of the day, not just for work (highly recommended) but for daily life too. For the most part, you can double skirts and dresses for both work wear and casual wear.
Schedule in Self-Care
Is this generic? Yeah, sure, but so what? It’s true! Basically, self-care isn’t just a buzzword; it’s crucial for managing stress during pregnancy, especially if you’ve got a demanding job. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate—sometimes, it’s as simple as taking a few minutes to step outside for fresh air or indulging in a cup of your favourite herbal tea.
Plan for Flexibility
Pregnancy can be unpredictable, so planning for flexibility in your work schedule is key. There’s no negotiating; you’re growing a little human inside of you! So, you’re going to have to talk to your employer about options like remote work or flexible hours. Depending on the work you do, they may allow for more flexibility. But overall, having the option to work from home, even occasionally, can really help on days when you’re not feeling your best or have appointments.
