As mums, we spend a lot of time with our kids. In their early years, we can be the primary caregivers. It’s us that gets a longer period of maternity leave – while our partners get just a few weeks off, we get months. As we spend so much time with our little ones, it’s important that we give our partner’s a chance to have that special time too.
For kids, especially boys, having a solid relationship with their father is important. That’s why, as they get older, it’s a good idea to help your partner come up with some ideas for things that they can bond over. A popular idea that’s fun and interesting for both your son and your partner is collecting things, simply because of how varied a hobby it is.
To help your partner find a collecting hobby that your son will also love, here are a few ideas and suggestions.
Old books

Has your partner always loved to read to your kids? Is he always making up stories for them? Does your son love to listen to his father reading and storytelling? Then perhaps, collecting old books could be the perfect hobby for the two of them to share. If there’s a particular author that your son is fond of, maybe that could be a good place to start? Or, perhaps your partner would like to introduce your son to the books he read as a boy? There are so many options to choose from; it’s just a case of letting your son and partner find some common ground.
Sports memorabilia
A lot of fathers and sons share a passion for sports. If your son is as sports mad as his dad, a sports memorabilia collecting hobby could be ideal for the two of them to share. This could be collecting items for a certain sport or a certain team, depending on who they’re crazy about. Whether the two of them share a passion for basketball, baseball or football, it doesn’t matter. Collecting sports memorabilia could be the ideal shared hobby. From old tickets and programs to signed balls and pictures, there are plenty of collecting options.
Vehicle models

Are your partner and son both car and plane mad? Then the perfect shared hobby for them to bond over could be collecting model vehicles and aircraft. These could be vintage designs as well as more modern ones, like Eddie Stobart vehicles, for instance. Not only could they collect replicas, if they’ve got an eye for art, perhaps they could collect model making kits as well. This adds a little creativity to the hobby and makes it that little bit more fun, especially for your son.
Vintage board games
This one might sound little odd, but it can be a great hobby to have. All kids love board games, so what better hobby for your partner and son than collecting vintage board games? Your partner can show your son the games he played as a child, and your son will get to see and explore lots of different games. Plus, collecting board games is a useful hobby to have as the whole family can enjoy them. From old chess boards to vintage monopoly, there are so many games to collect.
So there you have it, a selection of collecting ideas that are perfect for your partner and son to bond over.
