We are most definitely carnivores in the Midwife and Life house, with our littlest member loving eating meat. I’m afraid this isn’t one for vegetarians! I’m no stranger to a subscription box, and there’s something so satisfying about getting a box of surprise goodies through the post. You can get all manner of things sent to you in a subsciption box these days, Carnivore Club promises to be ‘The Utlimate Meat Club for discerning individuals,’ with handcrafted exclusive artisan products. They aim to bring you the best in cured meats from British butchers, with a specially selected range of 4-6 items from the chosen producer each month. They work with artisans that purchase ethically treated animals, employ humane slaughtering practices and use locally sourced ingredients. The provenance and sustainability of the charcuterie is just as important as the artisan’s passion for making exceptional products. Carnivore Club is said to be about “satisfying your inner carnivore” through the discovery of outstanding charcuterie and the story of their creators.
We received the box, which is themed to look like a wooden box with the carnivore club logo on it. When I opened it, I could smell the different charcuterie straight away and I was excited to try them. my husband was also keen, I managed to wait until he came home and snapped a few photos before the sampling began! We like to have a liitle nibble on something before dinner so this is perfect. Yes, you can get similar things in the supermarket, but these are from little known suppliers which you wouldn’t normally see, plus it’s all about their stories, finding out about the provenance, as well as trying new flavours.

We had the July box, which had Duchy charcuterie as their supplier. We had three different salamis to try: Pheasant and port, Pork and Pastis and Pork, Chilli and Rosemary. All classic flavour combinations, my Dad always drank Pastis, an aniseed flavoured alcohol when we were in France, and aniseed works well with pork, like fennel does. Pheasant and port sounds so luxurious, it made for a rich flavour. The Pork chilli and rosemary was probably the nicest, there was heat but not too much. Our only complaint was they were too small! “A nice snack for one person,” my husband said. So if you’re planning to share, maybe think again!

The box also included some billtong, again one of our favourite pre dinner snacks, there was a small amount, very tasty. Billtong is a dried spiced meat, quite chewy and salty, I love it. There were also some pork snax (that’s how they were described), which were like mini pepperamis but far richer in flavour – they would be good for lunch boxes. Next we tried the juniper infused ‘Coppa,’ an air dried ham made from pork shoulder, which rounded off the flavours nicely. If you add some olives, maybe some cheese and crackers, you’d have a nice supper. I think the box is lovely to share or enjoy yourself, why not invite some friends round to sample and discuss?

What you also get with the box is information about Carnivore club and the supplier, which makes what you’re eating all the more personal. You appreciate what you’re getting, knowing where it’s come from, the people who rear the animals and how they’ve worked on the flavours and the production.

Whilst we ate it over 2 days straight, you can easily savour it over a few days! I think if you’re a connoisseur of fine meats, this would be a good subscription box to have, you can also get it as a one off box, which would be ideal to get as a gift, particularly for those that are difficult to buy for. Perhaps combine it with a nice bottle of wine to go with it? I’d definitely consider getting it again for a family member this Christmas.
Disclosure: we were sent the carnivore club box as a gift in return for my open and honest review. All opinions are my own.
