I have been a long time user of Canva for work for a long time, because it’s so easy to use. I’m always on the lookout for alternatives though and to cut my monthly expenditure. I was approached and introduced to Fotor, an online photo editor which has everything that Canva has and more. I was so excited to try it out, because I’m a geek like that! I really enjoy looking into new graphic design trends and getting stuck in. I feel it’s my duty to keep on the lookout for something better so I can pass it on to you my fellow creators.
You can choose to edit a photo, make a collage or create a design from their graphic design templates. You can choose from their many templates or start your own design from scratch. From my initial exploration it has all the features I love, like shapes and icons, photos, graphics, infographics. The template sizes are all there, from social media to a resume, banner ads and social media headers, including YouTube thumbnails. You can also design your own logo from a template or invent your own. You can then save it as a PNG with a transparent background to use anywhere. Better than paying for a logo designer.
Here’s an example of a pin I made, using a stock photo and a template on Fotor, which has taken off on Pinterest. I also made this blog post’s feature image using the twitter post size and a template, it took me a few minutes to edit the text and looks really professional.
Photo Editor Tool
One of the better things I like about Fotor is the photo editor. You can use so many different tools to edit and improve your photos, yet it is much more intuitive to use than photoshop. I highly recommend editing any photos you use on your blog and Instagram, even if you just use the Instagram tools. A brightened up clear photo looks so much better. Steer clear of the set filters if you can. I used to use Clarenden a lot but it makes everything look a bit weird! I now edit them all individually.
Free version vs paid
So now onto the cost. There’s very little in the comparison of what you get with the free version of both Canva and Fotor. I would say though, that because so many bloggers use Canva, you can see the same sorts of pins on Pinterest, so using Fotor will give you that design edge and something different, which can help you stand out in a sea of competitors. Canva for work costs $119.40 per year or $12.95 per month. With that you get access to pro templates, more choice of stock photos, icons and graphics, you can have folders and brand colours and custom dimensions. You can also easily resize your designs. Fotor pro costs $39.99 for the year or $8.99 a month, so it works out a lot cheaper, particularly if you go for the annual pricing plan. With the pro plan you get to go ad free, advanced editing features, loads more images, stickers, unique and updated edit content, auto resizing, batch photo processing and cloud storage. I immediately cancelled Canva for work when I saw what Fotor could offer. They also have a mobile app so you can design on the go, available on android and apple.
