#1 Use a rainwater tank
A rainwater tank is a great way to reuse water that would otherwise be wasted. For example, you can use it for watering your plants or washing the car! Watering your garden with fresh rainwater will ensure you are not using any chemicals in your soil, which could harm young seedlings and root vegetables. It’s also cheaper than buying bottled drinking water over time because there are no additional costs after purchasing the tanks themselves.
Another benefit of having rainwater tank accessories is that you’re recycling! Recycling simply means reusing something again instead of throwing it away by putting it through another cycle, like turning paper into toilet paper or recycled plastic bottles into clothes hangers.
If this doesn’t convince you already, consider how much water you’ll be saving from the tap. Nationally, Australians use about 350 litres of water per person each day. If this were to continue over a year, that would add up to almost 137 thousand litres of water!
#2 Composting
Composting is a natural process where organic materials break down and decompose. This creates healthy soil for your garden by creating an environment where beneficial bacteria, organisms and microbes can thrive. The ingredients you use will vary depending on the type of compost produced. There are three major types:
- Green Compost – made from nitrogen-rich sources such as fruits, vegetables or grass clippings.
- Brown Compost – made from carbon-rich sources such as wood chips, sawdust or leaves.
- Comfrey Compost – used to speed up the breakdown of material through bacterial fermentation.
#3 Check for bugs
Most bugs are beneficial for plants, but some can be bad news. It’s essential to keep an eye out for harmful insects like aphids and snails, which can damage your garden by eating the leaves of vegetables or flowers.
#4 Utilize pots and planters
You can grow just about anything in a pot or planter. This is great for people who don’t have the space to plant an entire garden but still want fresh fruit and vegetables. Pots and planters are also ideal if you’re renting because they aren’t attached to your house. Plus, moving them around means you can enjoy flowers even when it’s raining!
Gardening is a great way to connect with nature and learn about different types of wildlife in Australia! You don’t have to do it alone either – join online forums or gardening groups where you’ll meet new people that share your interests. Plus, if you need advice on how to look after certain plants, there will always be someone who knows what they’re talking about.
