Tablets and smartphones have been lifesavers for families, particularly on long car journeys or when you need to concentrate at an appointment or they have long waiting times. They shouldn’t be used as a standard boredom reliever or babysitter, but at certain times, it’s handy to have some child friendly apps on your device that will keep them occupied.

But which apps are best for keeping kids occupied on those long trips? Here are a few you might want to download today.

#1 Lego’s My City 2

This is a popular app for kids that you might want to try out. Lego has been entertaining kids and adults for generations, and it’s now moved into mobile apps as well as its famous building blocks.

This app is free and there are no in-app purchases, which is even better. The idea is to build a Lego City complete with vehicles and buildings, and you can complete tasks like tackling fires. It’s great fun, and your kids will love it.

#2 Coloring Book for Me

Coloring in is a great activity for kids, but particularly when you’re in the car, it’s not exactly practical to use colored pens and paper. That’s where this app can help.

It provides a large selection of beautiful drawings for coloring in. You can electronically color them in on your phone or tablet, and kids will be entertained for ages. Also, there’s no chance of them making a mess in the back. Learn more about the app at the Google Play store.

#3 Dr. Seuss Book Collection

There are a few of these apps, and this is the first one in the series. It’s perfect for young readers who will love discovering the world of Dr. Seuss, and it’s a great introduction to reading. They can use the app to read the original books like ‘The Cat in The Hat,’ and they can also enjoy other extra features.

#4 BBC CBeebies Storytime

CBeebies is the TV channel for younger kids in the UK, and its free app is excellent. It contains stories comprising favorite characters from the TV shows, and they are read out to children, or children can read the stories themselves. The stories also include interactive features to bring the stories to life. It’s a great app, and it’s the perfect way to keep kids entertained. There’s also the CBeebies main app which has games from their favourite shows. There are no ads or in app purchases.

Top tip

Turn off in app purchases in your phone settings and you won’t have to worry about unexpected downloads or purchases!

Keep It Safe

Whatever apps you download for your kids, make sure that they stay safe when they use your smartphone or tablet. This goes for any time they use it, not just in the car. You want to make sure they only access suitable apps, and you don’t want them making calls or text messages by mistake.

There are many apps that can help here. Apps like Safe Browser Parental Control and Touch Lock could be useful, so try a few out and make sure your kids stay safe as they stay entertained.

These are a few of the best apps that your kids can use on long journeys to stop getting bored. Try them out and see which ones your children enjoy the most. Play them yourself and see how user friendly they are and if they’re educational or just for fun.
