When your family grows, it could be time to consider getting an appropriate car. A family car should be spacious, durable and practical to make it the ideal place for growing children. But if you’ve never bought a family car before it can be difficult to work out the criteria you should consider. Read on for a guide to choosing a family car.

Budget

You should begin by estimating the budget you’re working with. You don’t want to put yourself in a position where your car stretches your family’s finances. Once you know your budget, you should establish whether you want a new or used vehicle. New cars usually depreciate significantly in their first three years – if you want to avoid this loss you can go for a used car. However, if you do want a new car, various financial arrangements that can help. For instance, Rather than fronting the full cost of a car, leasing allows you to spread the cost within a monthly plan that suits you. Alternatively, you could purchase the car outright with a finance package where you pay monthly sums towards the full cost of a car.

Space

Space and size are key too. You’ll need a car that reflects the size of your family. If you have a four-person family then you’ll have more choice – every four-seater car could be an option. However, if your family is bigger then you’ll need to search for a more comfortable five-seater car at least. At this point, you’ll need to begin looking at SUVs and people carriers to comfortably fit your family on those long road trips.

Practicality

A family car needs to be practical too. For instance, with young children you’ll need a solid, durable interior that can withstand any fiddling. There are other factors to consider too. If you’re going to be carrying around pets, you’ll need space for a cage in the boot. Meanwhile, it’s also important to consider where you’ll be driving. If you just want a city car, then something nimble and agile can help. But if you anticipate going off-road then you’ll need a car with more horsepower.

Safety features

When you buy a family car, you’ll also want the peace of mind that safety features bring. You should be keeping an eye out for vehicles that feature electronic stability control to prevent skidding. Plus, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping technology and visibility aids can all prove to be incredibly useful.

Buying a suitable family car can make your life much easier when transporting your children. Just stick to a budget and look out for something practical, spacious and with the best safety features.
