Being a mother and fashionista don’t really go hand in hand unless you’re Victoria Beckham or Stella McCartney. Even then, we all have the sneaking suspicion that they get a little more help than we all do. After you have kids, it can be hard to even start thinking about what clothes you’re wearing when you have your gorgeous little pink wiggly worm of a baby to take care of. But even as a mother, we all want to retain our senses of style and individuality. Here are some tips on how to do that…
Don’t Get Your Hair Cut

We all know what that traditional ‘mum’ haircut looks like, and I am here to tell you that you don’t need to go for it. If you love your long hair, it’s absolutely okay to keep it! Try out some volumising dry shampoo for the days you don’t have time to wash it, and why not learn to French plait your own hair to keep it out of your face? (This skill will also keep you in high demand if you have a daughter.) Go for subtle low lights rather than high lights so you don’t have to get it recoloured too often. If you suffer from frizzy and static hair, try a leave in conditioning spray or something like the Forbabs anti static brush. Failing that, a quick wipe with baby wipes will do the trick!
Throw On The Bare Minimum Of Makeup

We’ve all seen those mums at the school gates wearing a full face of makeup. Forget them. They probably get up at 5AM, and quite frankly there is no way that that’s worth it. Instead, there are a few things you can do to make yourself look a bit more bright-eyed and bushy-tailed first thing in the morning. Slap on some sunscreen – the number one skincare tip – followed by some BB cream, which is a little like tinted moisturiser, followed by some eyebrow pencil, mascara and lip balm. If you need to dress up, all you need to add is red lipstick. Red lipstick makes everything else look as though it was intentional. Ta-dah!
Make Sure You Accessorise

There is absolutely nothing that can elevate an outfit like accessorising. You could be wearing baggy boyfriend jeans and your oldest, rattiest t-shirt and you could still look like you were wearing couture if you put on some heels and used your most gorgeous handbag. Of course, as busy mums, we don’t have much of an inclination to cram our toes into six inch platforms every day and our handbags are more like vast holdalls full of Lego and snacks and dirty tissues than elegant satchels, so instead you could go for accessories like well-fitted leather jackets, a bright, pretty scarf or a statement item of jewellery like pearl earrings instead. Adding good quality accessories – but not too many of them! – can instantly upgrade an outfit.
Develop Your Personal Style

After having babies, we sometimes don’t feel confident about our figures and we tend to swathe ourselves in layers of material to hide bits of ourselves that we don’t feel good about. But it’s still important to wear clothes that you love and emphasise the parts of your body that you like. Some new perfume can lift your mood and make you feel great. Bright colours and patterns will always be gorgeous – and let’s face it, they’re a lot better at hiding all manner of stains than black, grey and white are…
