How to Cut the Cost of Family Life

Disclosure: collaborative post

Life with kids can be pretty expensive, as there is always something that you need to buy. From new school shoes that cost more than you have ever spent on your own footwear, to money for school trips, there always seems to be something expensive forcing you to part with your cash. However, with a few simple adjustments, there are ways to cut the cost of family life, here are some tips to help you to do just that:

Shop Smart

For most families, grocery shopping can be one of the most significant weekly expenditures. It’s so easy for spending to spiral out of control when you visit the supermarket. To cut the cost of your food shopping, it is advisable to make a list and stick with it. To make sure that your list includes everything that you need for the week ahead it is a great idea to make a meal plan for the week so that you know exactly what ingredients to buy.

Why not go veggie? It will make you healthier, it’s good for the planet and it saves money. There are some great vegetarian meal ideas out there.

If you struggle to avoid making impulse buys at the supermarket, it could be a good idea to switch to online shopping, so that you can avoid temptation.

Reduce Your Outgoings

Reducing your bills each month is a great way to realise savings, after all, no one likes to pay more than they need to, especially on bills. Scanning through your bank statements to see where your money is going each month is the best place to start.

If you notice direct debits for subscriptions and memberships that you no longer need, such as a gym membership you never use, then look into cancelling these immediately.

Some of the most substantial savings can be made on your utility bills. Switching energy suppliers is a popular way to save money, and is pretty simple to do, just set aside a little time to make the comparisons between suppliers, and you could be surprised by how much you can save each month.

Make an Emergency Fund

This last tip concerns protecting your finances from being drained by unexpected bills. After all your hard work reducing the cost of family life, it is useful to put those savings to use, and seeing them stack up. Creating an emergency fund that you pay a little money into each month will go some way to covering those unwelcome bills that seem to crop up when you least expect them. Setting aside money will mean that when a rainy day does come along, you have the spare cash to hand. If you don’t have an emergency fund, you may need to turn to direct lenders to borrow the money that you require. If you do this, make sure that you are fully aware of how much you need to pay back.

Unexpected bills are often the most expensive, so it is a wise idea to be as prepared as you can be for whatever life throws in your way by setting aside some funds for when you truly need them.
