Exercise is something we can loathe having to do. You get out of breath, your skin goes all red and sweaty, and ultimately you’re just not motivated to keep up with the regime you’ve chosen. And while some people find it hard to do so due to time constraints, a lot of people find it hard thanks to just how boring they find their usual routine! So it’s time to switch it up and disguise the exercise you want to do in other fun things. Check out the guide below for how to get started.
Exercise for You, No One Else
If you’re exercising to look good in a photo, that can be fine. But it can’t be your only motivation! The feeling needs to come from inside, to be intrinsic, and to ensure you’re putting yourself first and no one else. The more you think about exercise from an outside point of view, the more you’re going to hate doing it. But if you focus on why it could be good for you and only you, you may find it far easier to try out in the long term.
Pick a Sport You Actually Like
If you hate to jog, or you’re not a swimmer, or you don’t like the environment of the gym, find a sport you actually like to do and commit to that instead. Whether that’s a bit of badminton or you’re a fan of using carbon road bikes to ascend hills, throw yourself into this new activity! Start with going once a week, rediscover your love for what you’re doing and get into the flow with it, and then try going twice a week. You’ll soon find it easy to go along 3 or 4 times a week and enjoy yourself every time.
Start Playing Some Physical Video Games
Video games are so much more physical now than they were 20 years ago. With consoles like the Wii and the Switch, the era of games that got you on your feet started off strong, and it only got stronger with VR and everything that entails. From playing Just Dance to trying out a round of Beat Saber to getting in a full workout when playing Ring Fit Adventure, video games can get you breaking a sweat for hours on end! If you like gaming, this is the one method on this list to definitely give a go.
Don’t Discount How Much Time You’re on Your Feet
And finally, remember how active you are throughout the day even without actively trying. You’re walking a lot, you’re standing at least 40% of the time, and even cleaning, cooking, and putting the kids to bed could count as exercise. If you keep your phone on you at all times, you can count your steps easily at the end of the day – all of these activities count as exercise!
Remember: exercise can be fun, and you can trick yourself into liking it if need be!
