If you’re looking for a new place to call home, Northern Idaho deserves its fair share of consideration. It’s a wonderful area with ample natural beauty. It’s the perfect setting for outdoor activities, and there are plenty of them to take advantage of. It also has relatively mild weather. Unlike some other corners of the country, it has four noticeable seasons, and each of them is equally beautiful. Northern Idaho has some of the lowest crime rates in the nation as well. Beyond that, it offers a terrific blend of rural, urban, and suburban life for its residents to choose from.
One of the most popular and incredible places to live in Northern Idaho is around Lake Pend Oreille. This area offers its residents a long list of pull factors. If you’re interested in lake pend oreille real estate, several options are on the market. While you’re browsing through the possibilities, take a look at ten of the fun activities that await you in this portion of Idaho.
1) Watersports
Obviously, if you live near Lake Pend Oreille, you could easily fill your free time with watersports. That includes waterskiing, jet skiing, paddle boarding, and kayaking. Swimming is an option as well, or you could simply lounge on a float and soak in some sun. You could take a boat out on the water for a picnic and a lovely day out too. Those are only a few of the possibilities. Virtually any watersport you can imagine is at your disposal when you live on or near the lake. They’re all great ways to enjoy nature, blow off steam, get some fresh air, and leave stress behind.
2) Fishing
Anglers flock to Lake Pend Oreille too. There are plenty of fish to catch, including bass, Chinook salmon, and several species of trout to name a few. Whether you’re fishing for sport or for dinner, you probably won’t be disappointed. Even if you don’t catch anything, you’ll have a wonderful day out on the lake, and you’ll come home a bit happier and more relaxed than you were when you got there. Be sure to keep your fishing license up to date and pay attention to local limits and restrictions, though.
3) Pend Oreille River Water Trail
You can also venture along the Pend Oreille River Water Trail in a kayak or canoe. The trail starts in Oldtown, Idaho and meanders through the northeastern corner of Washington all the way to Canada. Of course, you don’t have to canoe your way out of the state to enjoy all the trail has to offer. You can take it just a short distance to get a unique glimpse of the local wildlife and natural landscape. Pend Oreille River is one of only a few in the nation that actually flows north, so this is an experienced not to be missed.
4) Camping
Camping at Lake Pend Oreille is a fantastic way to get away as well. If you live there, it won’t be a major stretch, but it’ll still feel like you’re miles away from the rest of the world. You can sit at your campsite, or in your back yard as the case may be, and gaze at the beautiful lake and the mountains in the distance around it. When you’re ready to venture away from the campsite, you can enjoy the fishing, watersports, and other activities that are available. At the end of the day, you can fall asleep to the sounds of nature singing all around you.
5) Hiking
Lake Pend Oreille is also a great place for hiking. You’ll find plenty of trails for exploring the area. While you’re making your way through them, you’ll get a firsthand look at the wildlife, foliage, and other breathtaking sights. You might see deer, several types of chipmunks and squirrels, rabbits, bald eagles, and many other animals as you’re roaming the trails. You may even spot an elk or a mule deer though those sightings are rare. There are miles of hiking trails to enjoy, and each one is an experience all its own.
6) Visiting the Beach
Of course, while you’re at Lake Pend Oreille, you can certainly spend some time at the beach. Why not pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it while you’re watching people playing in the water. Then, stretch out next to the lake and spend the rest of the evening relaxing. You could even walk along the lake at night with the moon lighting your way.
7) Golfing
Not every activity at Lake Pend Oreille has to revolve around the lake itself. If you’re a golfer, you’ll love living in the area. Several golf courses are available, each one offering its own features. No matter what your skill level is, you’ll find a course to accommodate it or even challenge it if that’s what you’re looking for. Many of the local golf courses also have wonderful views of the lake and nearby mountains.
8) Dining and Nightlife
On top of all those opportunities, there’s no shortage of dining and nightlife in the area. Nearby cities like Coeur D’Alene and Sandpoint have an array of local eateries, craft breweries, and other delights. You’ll find almost any type of cuisine you’re in the mood for, or you could simply stop by a local shop for coffee or a drink. Bars, clubs, and live music are there for you to enjoy as well, so you could certainly have a night out on the town anytime you like.
9) Mountain Drives
Another amazing way to pass the time is to drive into the mountains and take in the scenery. In summer, the foliage is lush and green, and in the fall, it’s ablaze with vibrant colors. Springtime drives allow you to see all the trees coming to life, and even winter drives are beautiful and peaceful. These days, people don’t take time to just drive around and appreciate the beauty of the world around them as much as they once did. If you live in Northern Idaho, though, there’s no reason not to.
10) Winter Activities
Northern Idaho does get snow in the winter, and that completely transforms the landscape. Some people can spend hours just staring out their windows at the winter wonderland once it arrives. You don’t have to spend snow days indoors, though. You could take a brisk winter hike, go sledding, or venture into the mountains for skiing, snowboarding, and other activities.
