Do I need Fertility vitamins?
You may be thinking can’t I just take a multivitamin and eat a balanced diet, and for many people that will be enough, but fertility specific vitamins – designed for women and men – contain other ingredients especially for healthy sperm and egg production and hormone balance.
When should I start taking fertility supplements?
If you are preparing to try and conceive, start taking fertility vitamins 3 months prior to trying. This will build up your levels to their optimum. If you’ve been trying for over a year with no joy you may want to see your GP to get referred for some initial tests.

With any vitamin supplement when you are trying to conceive or are pregnant, you need to make sure that the Vitamin A content is not too high, the recommended daily allowance when pregnant or trying to conceive is 770mcg (or 2565 IU). Vitamin A is high in certain foods like liver. The levels in different brands of supplements are not always the same, so you need to compare the ingredients list, don’t just go by price or packaging. Fertility supplements that come under the Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) or Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) are best as these are regulated and contain what they claim on the label. If your herbal supplement is registered under the Food Standards Agency (FSA), their manufacture is not regulated and therefore may not have the quantities of nutrients that the label claims (though they shouldn’t do you any harm).
