As my daughter turns 6 I thought I’d share with you some of what we’ve bought for her. It’s been difficult, because it seems she’s on the cusp of growing out of her CBeebies related babyish toys and ideas, and growing into a sort of pre-tween/tween girl. She wants to be grown up but is still very childish, and so she should be! It was hard to come up with present ideas for my 6 year old, because she has lots of toys but doesn’t play with them all, and mostly likes to draw, dress up, play outside and watch TV. I decided not to go mad, and tried to focus on quality and fun.
Magazine subscription

Choose your magazine wisely. You can choose 6 monthly or annually, so if they’re into My little Pony or Arts and Crafts now, will they want it every month for a year? We went for a general girl’s magazine for 6 months, in her age range (5-9) called Katie. It’s hard to get a girl’s magazine that isn’t sickly sweet with princesses oozing out from everywhere and mock make up. Believe me this was the best one! I toyed between this one and a Mister Maker or art one, but I thought that there are better projects we can do together with proper art supplies than the few bits you get with the magazine. Children love getting post that’s addressed to them, it makes them feel so special. Plus it stops them pestering you for one whilst you’re out if they’re getting one a month! There are loads of titles to choose from whatever they’re into. I got mine from Unique Magazines.
Trolls DVD
I’ve heard only good things about the Trolls movie and it reminds me of my youth when anyone who was anyone had a troll pencil topper. I know this is a film we’re both going to enjoy together tucking into some popcorn.
Lol Surprise Doll
These are the latest collectibles to hit the UK and I know she’ll like this. The LOL surprise doll is reminiscent of a kinder egg crossed with a shopkin, there’s the surprise element, you don’t know which one you’re going to get, then there’s the seven layers, each one reveals something new: a secret message, a bottle of some decscription, a sticker, a charm, shoes, an outfit, accessory and finally the doll. You can collect more and mix and match the accessories. I can’t wait to see what we, I mean Phoebe will unwrap.
Phoebe the Fashion Fairy Book
Phoebe’s reading is really coming along and she’s got into the Rainbow Fairies book series. We’ve had a couple out of the library and borrowed from school, I’ve had to read them previously, but know she can read a lot of it herself. She noticed on the inside of one of the other books that there was a Phoebe fairy, so I hopped on Amazon and bought it for her, she’s going to be chuffed, plus it’s about fashion, one of her favourite things.
Bunchems
As she loves playdough and arts and crafts, I’ve got these Bunchems kits for her, I’m a bit wary of little balls going everywhere, but they squidge together and aren’t as messy as playdough can be. I’ve got this one and another kit for her, which I’ll be doing a separate review for once she’s opened them. (Now available, our review here).
Itty Bittys
She’s got lots of cuddly toys but she does love them, and I couldn’t resist this small but powerful wonder woman from Hallmark. I like to encourage the wonder woman inside her and let her know she’s full of super girl power.
Finally, these are the cards we’ve got for her, she loves shopkins so that one is from us, then William chose the sweet sister one, and Daniel chose the flowers card. He’s loving the spring flowers at the moment. We’ve also bought her some pyjamas, sweets and more craft supplies, so help me. Her party is at a soft play center that she wanted, and the cake is going to be cupcakes with some gorgeous unicorn accessories that I’ll be posting about on my food blog Mama Foodie.
