Growing a Business and Having a Baby: Can You Do Both

While you might read that title and wonder if it’s possible to do both things, the answer is that, yes, it is possible. But it takes an understanding of balance, and a dedication to making time for yourself, as well.

Recognize You Cannot Do It Alone

Firstly, if you have a partner, then reach out to them to help you with the laundry, cooking, and picking up the kids or dropping them off at school. Other moms and dads are also a great resource; they can carpool your kids, as well as providing great business contacts. You might not know it yet, but the mom of your child’s best friend could be your next business partner or a future employee.

Separate Business from Marriage

Balance is essential to be an effective business owner and maintain a strong marriage. For example, have a set time when you put away your phone and other devices so that you can spend quality time with your spouse. Otherwise, you will still have your mind partially on work. Your marriage deserves better than that; be fully present when you are with this special person.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Using your time wisely will help you be at your best for your family and in the workplace. To run your business better, use a cloud payroll system to automate processes that previously were manually done, taking responsibilities off your plate. Then you can spend more time on your business growth strategy, as well as improving employee satisfaction levels.

Remember Self-Care

While you are looking after the health of your little one and partner, as well as daily business operations, don’t forget about yourself. If you’re constantly on the go and getting little sleep, you’ll quickly burnout. Instead, make time for yourself to be at your best as a parent and the owner of a growing company. Schedule in fitness time, for example, and talk a long bath while your spouse watches the kids for a while at night.

Proudly Show You are a Parent

Rather than hiding the fact you are pregnant or have a young child, be proud to show off your family as part of who you are. For example, if you have a baby who is only a few months old, then you’ll likely bring him or her into the office and work from home certain days too.

When you talk about being a parent and running a business, you are advancing the conversation about moms as business owners, and that’s a great thing! It can hopefully make people more accepting of moms in the workplace.

Final Words on Balancing Business and Being a Mom

While it takes some creativity, there are ways to balance growing a business with parenting. It requires finding a balance that works for you and your unique family, as well as being flexible. While you might plan out a day, it can go sideways, especially when you have a baby. But keep your sights on the future and know that you are doing amazing, mamma!
