How finding your bump buddy can support a healthier pregnancy and baby (especially during the pandemic!) Ad

Having social support is key to staying healthy during those 9 months of pregnancy, especially during the hard times of isolation.

While social support from family and friends that have had children is good, it’s optimal to connect with women who are simultaneously going through the same experience. Few women have been lucky to have a friend or family member that is pregnant at the same time, often referred to as having a “Bump Buddy.”

When you have someone that is in the same boat, you feel open to ask more questions, check-in often,  and share how you are feeling. This sort of behaviour and support helps reduce anxieties and stress which in turn supports good mental health and sets the foundation for good physical health.

You might think it is hard or that it takes luck to find your bump buddy, but it doesn’t – Peanut App has a feature to do just that. When you join Peanut and enter your due date you will have the opportunity to be matched with other women in your area that have the same due date, and find that oh so important bump buddy.

To join Peanut, download the free app on iOS or Android. Then it’s really simple, you sign up for free, you can opt into email subscription so you’re not automatically subscribed. Then you choose what stage you’re at, for example Expecting, mum of two etc. You can choose up to three icons that describe you like outdoorsy, love to eat and loads more! It’s a bit like a dating app for Mum friends, you can swipe up to ‘wave’ at someone, swipe down to look through the Mums, all local to you. I was amazed at how many mums are on there local to me. If you and the other Mum both wave at each other, it’s a match.

My Peanut profile

I remember when I had my first child, I was so lonely and I felt very unsupported, despite going to Mum groups and having family nearby. Perhaps if I had had some more people to connect with going through the same thing I would have felt different. When I had my third child I attended a regular breastfeeding group weekly and it made a real difference to my breastfeeding journey and the support I felt.

Peanut’s Bump Buddies feature connects mums-to-be by their due date. The app is helping expectant mums support each other virtually as the pandemic prevents in-person meet-ups. Once you’ve added your due date or how many weeks you are, you will be added to the correct Mum’s due group to meet women due exactly when you are. They also suggest other groups based on your interests. I ticked ‘outdoorsy’ so they suggest The Outdoor Club UK for me.

For the purposes of this post to show you the features I signed up as due in July, I’m not actually pregnant before you start congratulating me! I’m not having any more. Three is enough for me!

The feature aims to help mums-to-be navigate pregnancy, as well as foster new and supportive friendships with women going through the same challenges and joys as them, from first scans and kicks to making birth plans. Users on the app will automatically be added to a Bump Buddy group after indicating how far along they are in their pregnancy. The app will also match them with other individual women that are due around the same time, who share similar interests and other life experiences (such as other children the same age, similar location, single parent etc).

What do you think? Will you use an app such as Peanut to help you connect with your Bump Buddy?

Have you found your bump buddy yet? If you could use some support from someone going through pregnancy at the same stage, try the peanut app.
