How to: Balance Your Bucket list with Childcare

Time is a ticking clock, and its unceasing hands never stop. And while those hands rapidly revolve around the clock-face of life, your job is to cram as many experiences as possible into your short holiday on Earth.

It’s like the essayist Walter Pater said: ‘For our one chance lies in expanding that interval, in getting as many pulsations as possible into the given time.’ In simpler terms, there aren’t enough hours in the day, but it’s your job to make the most of the time you have.

When a child enters your life, it might feel as though your schedule is even more restricted, that all those tantalising pulsations that once floated before you have been dragged into the deep waters of ‘other, more pressing commitments.’

But that’s not the case, especially in an era when even the biggest pipedreams can be procured at the click of a button.

So, let us show you how, even when you’re attending to childcare duties, you can still make the most of your time to achieve your lifelong goals.

Goal one: get a degree

Degrees take years to obtain, and there’s good reason for that. If you truly want to master a skill, then you’ll need to dedicate yourself to the pursuit.

In the modern age, however, the form your dedication takes is a lot more flexible, and it doesn’t have to consist of endless trips to a faraway campus.

Instead, distance learning from a provider like ARU Distance Learning allows you to study at a time that suits you. So, you can fit in a few revision sessions while your baby’s asleep, just before bed, or on your phone while you commute.

Distance learning is generally less expensive than its in-person counterpart, but the educational experience is no less effective. We highly recommend it.

Goal two: run a marathon

Once the crippling tiredness that comes with raising a child is over, staying fit isn’t out of the grasp of young parents.

If you’ve always dreamed of running a marathon, fear not – training is possible with your child in tow.

Many stockists can sell you baby strollers designed specifically for running, with extra padding to stop your child being bounced to and fro while you run.

Be aware, however, that specialists recommend children don’t accompany you on runs until they’re at least one year old – so you might have to wait a while before beating your personal best.

Goal three: read great literature

If you inhale books like they were oxygen, there’s no reason to let childcare duties get in the way of that good habit.

When your baby’s asleep, apportion some time to brew a coffee, put your feet up and sink into a good novel.

And if you fancy a challenge, why not start your reading odyssey with some of the greats? Moby Dick, Crime and Punishment, The Handmaid’s Tale and Pride and Prejudice are classics for a reason, and all deserve to be read at least once in a lifetime.

Those are our tips! What’s on your bucket list? Let us know in the comments below!
