Now the season has finally changed (OK so we can never rely on the weather) it’s important to know how to dress your baby for the Summer. Is it better to continue to wrap the baby up or is a different approach needed? If you have a baby due in Summer, what sort of clothes should you be buying for her? I will go through what you need in this article.

Expecting a Summer baby

I myself am a Summer baby, I was born in July, and my oldest son was born in August. It’s a hard time of year to have a baby, especially when it’s really hot. Breastfeeding and artificial feeding make you both really hot and sticky and although we love baby cuddles it all gets very hot and sticky. Tip – when feeding your baby, use a muslin over your arm to stop that sweaty skin on skin. You can never have too many muslin squares. There are so many cute baby clothes around, but which type of clothes will get the most wear out of and be more practical?

Vests

You can never have too many vests, particularly for a Summer baby. The plain short sleeved ones are a traditional staple, make sure they have an envelope style head opening so you can easily put it over your baby’s head. Another advantage to this style is if you have a poop explosion, you can open it up and pull the whole vest downwards rather than over the head covering your baby’s head in poop!

You can see above that the vests come in cute patterns and can be worn as a standalone outfit.

You can also get romper suits that are like shorts and they make really nice summer outfits. They can be worn with socks and booties and a cardigan if need be or on their own in hot weather.

Shorts and T shirts

You can get shorts and t-shirts or skirts and tops and T-shirts for babies, and they look very nice, but I’m telling you they aren’t very practical. Every time you pick them up the top will ride up and it tends to bunch up and make the baby uncomfortable. Try and stick to all in one outfits. It’s the same with dresses – get a couple of cute ones for photos and then keep them as a memento!

Which Summer blankets to buy?

Cellular blankets (the ones with holes in) made from 100% cotton are best, and you can also get some lighter summer blankets. Your baby will still need blankets, and layers are best that you can take off if needed. Invest in a room thermometer where your baby sleeps so you can change the level of layers needed.

Will my baby need to wear hats?

This really depends on how cold your house is, the weather and if your baby was full term. If you have a preemie, they feel the cold easier and a light hat may be beneficial. Choose breathable cotton as a material.

What about scratch mitts?

Your beautiful baby will come with long nails that need trimming believe it or not, and their jerky uncoordinated movements will result in them accidentally scratching their lovely face. You can get scratch mitts on their own or they come integrated into sleepsuits or vests. These are the best ones because they don’t fall off! The little mitten ones on their own just fall off all the time. Another alternative is to put baby socks on their hands. Keep their nails short with baby safety clippers. I still use mine as I find them easier to use than the adult ones!

So there you have it, a quick rundown on your baby’s summer wardrobe necessities. Would you add anything to this list?

It’s always nice to have a clear out once in a while. I do Blake’s room regularly because of having to change around his clothes as he grows out of them so fast.
