Keen to make a go of co-parenting in a way that is good for the kids, but that also works for you and your fellow parent? It might sound like an almost impossible task, but you know what? It doesn’t have to be as difficult as you think. Here’s what you can do to get it right and make it work without losing your cool.

1. Communicate Like Pros (Yes, Really)

Successful co-parenting, after a divorce, for example, starts with good communication. If you can get that right, right from the off, then your chances of co-parenting success are so much higher. Obviously, you don’t need to be constantly texting each other or anything like that, but keep the lines of communication open so that you always know what the kids are up to and what needs to be done. A shared calendar is ideal for this as you can keep track of dentist appointments and school plays without feeling like you’re always forced to be talking, and without any crossed wires that could cause a problem!

2. Make the Rules Crystal Clear (and Stick to Them!)

When it comes to co-parenting, consistency is key. Kids thrive on routine, so agree on the basics early on – bedtimes, screen time, homework rules, and so on. That way, your children won’t get confused or try to pit you against each other (don’t worry; they’ll still try!). A family lawyer can help you outline and formalise these guidelines if needed, creating a structure that works for both households. Having this framework means you’re less likely to butt heads over every little detail, and the kids know what to expect no matter where they are.

3. Be Flexible – Life Happens

Let’s be real: no plan survives intact. Maybe your ex has a work emergency and can’t pick up the kids, or you have to swap weekends for a special event. Flexibility is crucial to keeping things running smoothly. Sure, having a schedule is essential, but remember to roll with the changes when needed. By being a bit flexible (and expecting the same from them), you’ll find co-parenting feels less rigid and more manageable.

4. Keep Conflict Out of the Kids’ View

It might sound like a no-brainer, but this is one of the hardest parts of co-parenting. Try to keep disagreements away from little ears, saving heated discussions for a time when the kids aren’t around. The less they feel caught in the middle, the happier and more secure they’ll be. If things do get tricky, consider bringing in a family lawyer to mediate and help work through disputes calmly.

5. Put the Kids First – Always

Co-parenting success hinges on putting your children’s needs first. They’re the reason you’re both doing this in the first place, so always keep them at the centre of your decisions. The happier and more supported they feel, the smoother things will be for everyone involved. When you’re focused on making things great for them, co-parenting can become a positive, cooperative experience rather than a battle.
